So, I have been composing some ideas for a while now and I have found myself stuck in this tonal center on my guitar and I cant break free.
I the know basic theory of diatonic and circle progressions and blah blah blah...
I write a basic chord progression in whatever root Aeolian.
For those who dont know 1-2-b3-4-5-b6-b7.
I improvise a melody line over it and go through the shapes blah..
Out pops a new song, easy.
My problem is Aeolian is my favorite mode and i get stuck in this open 5 8 10 12 relationship with my guitar. I try other modes, thirds, sixths, fifths, flatted sixths and nothing beyond that sounds "good" to my ear while I am playing.
I have delved into many other genres (even dub step) to break free on my own and bubkiss, nothing. I can listen to others play outside of Aeolian and sound great, but my own personal tastes while playing just don't gravitate in a similar fashion.
Have I grown so familiar with it that I cant bare to move on?
Now don't get me wrong, like i said before, coming up with new material is easy. It's a lack of comfort in a "new" environment on my guitar that is bugging me.
How do I move on? How have any of you worked through this?
Buy lots and lots of new gear.
