So i've been playing guitar for a few years now but i never really felt the need to learn any scales/chords that kinda thing, i mainly just jam, cover songs etc.
I've been researching about scales but i haven't really gotten much of a clear answer as to if i need to learn them and which ones i should learn, i think i've been fine so far but this has got me worried as to whether i need scales.
So do i actually need to learn them/ how would it help if so?
Well you are actually playing chords and scales by playing the cover tunes. The problem is you don't have them organized in any way you can really use them.
First anything you can learn to improve your knowledge of the instrument is a good thing to do. Learning chords and scales is a basic fundamental concept that you need to learn to be a competent musician.
It helps you quickly figure out songs by ear so you don't have to depend on tabs, allows you to create easily without experimenting with what chords or scales sound good and which ones sound bad, it helps with breaking you out of playing the same old things over and over again.
Basically it's equivalent to learning another language. If you don't know what the words mean then all you'll be doing is walking around repeating phrases you heard before but it won't make alot of sense because you don't know what the words mean. Everyone will be looking at you like your a crazy person!
