I get much cleaner sounds when I use my neck pup.
Is this a form of cheating for cleanliness?
Most everything I do melodically in the bridge pos sounds like im pretty much sucking overall, unless im staccato palm mute picking or cording.
Is it my skills lacking or is my gain to harsh in the bridge pup?
It's some of all of that.
The bridge pickup will usually be brighter (it's called the treble pickup sometimes), which will highlight any mistakes you might be making. The neck pickup will smooth things out some, and you can play less accurately, and it will still sound acceptable.
However, you should be using the neck pickup because you like the sound, not because you can't play the part cleanly enough for it to sound clean on the bridge pickup. I call switching to the neck pickup just to hide your mistakes "neck slop".
Practice more. Play it right. Then decide if the TONE is better on the neck or bridge pickup.
