How did you guys learn guitar?

I just thought this would be an interesting question to ask: How did you guys learn guitar?

My first teacher was the guitarist in my church's worship band, and he taught me 2 scales and all the CAGED chords. Then, I started getting lessons from a more advanced teacher and that's how I got where I am today.

I'm assuming most people here are self taught, but I'm curious.

this pretty much goes for me too, taught myself the basic open chords, i got a good feel for power chords and bar chords and the different positions. i know a few basic scales but that is about all i know as far as theory goes.

My dad passed it down, all of my brothers and my sister weren't interested in it playing so as soon as I showed interest in it my dad got me going. After two years of playing by myself I got a teacher and learned some theory and scales, and after two years of that I decided I'd go back to teaching myself again.

Self taught for about 3 years .. Learned open chords and lead lines by learning songs. I could play a few solos from those songs too.. It got to the point where I realized that I could play Songs, but not Music. I wanted to be able to walk into a jam, listen for a few seconds, and join in.

I went to lessons for about a year and a half or so. Had a wicked teacher and learned tons! Got out of it exactly what I was wanting plus so much more. I wish I would've gotten into lessons earlier.

    Wirelessly posted

4ish years of lessons at the start. They helped a lot.
