I have started working on a song recently that is basically just a 50s progression that has soloing over it, but with interludes that explore different sub genres of metal. I'm not the kind of guy who over-categorizes genres of metal, but I was wondering what are some specific elements of genres like Death Metal, Black Metal or Thrash Metal? I haven't learned how to learn music by ear yet and I was wondering what some of the basic elements are behind genres of metal theory wise.
(and I know the 50s progression isn't very metal, it's a goofy song)
It's less about any theoretical or musicological elements and more about stylistic ones.
There'll be better authorities on this stuff than me, but here's a couple of obvious ones:
Death metal - blast beats, flat 5 chords
Thrash metal - skank and D beats and half time variations
Black metal - tremolo picking, minor chords where major chords would be expected
