So a little background here...since I started playing guitar when I was 14 (now 29) I've exclusively played 7-string. Dabbled with Drop A some, but vast majority has been B standard. There's nothing wrong with it and I'm happy where I'm at, but I've been curious to dabble or try something new. I've been curious to perhaps get a 6-string to setup with Drop B or something like that, i'm afraid of not being familiar/comfortable with it and losing the "range" (which I don't use much), having to relearn actual notes on the fretboard and etc. It may be a good thing and force me out of my comfort zone.
Who else has thought about or made a similar switch? Did you regret it and go back, or was it night and day you should have done it sooner? Is it just another tool in the box? What tips do you have for making the transition? I'm so wired in the way I've been for so long I need all the help I can get.
I hope this doesn't sound too harsh, but if the difference presents a conceptual problem, you've definitely been thinking about the guitar wrong, and this will be a good excuse for you to revisit things. Besides a tactile difference from the thickness of the neck, you shouldn't be noticing any difference. It's like thinking there's some operational difference between two differently sized rulers. Besides the range, they're functionally the same.
On a more positive note, I moved from playing 7s for something like 10 years back to 6 string, and I've really been enjoying it.
