Shade is tough... The one along the fence seems to be a perimeter with your neighbors, so there I'd suggest some sort of cover - maybe shrubs that mature at around 6-8', or can be trimmed to that height, to give you a little more privacy and to a limited extent sound isolation in your backyard. The raised bed, for me, would be a natural for herbs, but I'd be worried about them getting enough sun. If they do, you'll never regret having basil, mint, rosemary, cilantro, or oregano constantly on hand in the summer for making your own cocktails, salsas, and marinades/dressings. This is doubly true if you get a few large planters and put tomatoes back there as well.
