So, with my grindcore album being pretty much complete (all songs written and recording in progress), I'm gonna finish working on my doom/groove metal album (it's 1/2 way done already) and have been looking basses to have a fresh start with it and it'll offer a new writing standpoint.
My main gripe is that since I have my SG in B, that means the bass needs that low B but I feel like if I buy a 5 string bass and leave it in standard; my writing is just gonna stay the same, it'll just sound that much lower. However, I may not necessarily use this for recording since my teacher has a 5 string bass of his own and he usually tracks the bass (I always offer to but he ends up doing it, so it's not like I'm forcing him).
I feel like the best thing to do would be to use just a regular 4 string bass and possibly put it in like C# or something that I can still get a heavy sound and be close to how parts will sound in reality but it won't just be using the same tuning on a different instrument.
What do you guys think?
Get a 5-string?
It's really not all that different regardless of how you tune it. Bass in and of itself does kind of change how you approach notes and writing since you're dealing with single notes and a very different tonality.
