Ugly and uncomfortable
Seriously, though, I doubt it'd balance very well, and I'm not sure how great it would sound. Could be ok, but...
I'd base it (no pun intended) more on going out and playing a bunch of stuff in your price range, and picking what feels and sounds best. Different basses have very
different sounds, despite what you might think at first, and the feel completely changes your technique. My old bassist had a BC Rich Beast 4-string that sounded really decent considering the price, but felt terrible, was incredibly neck heavy, and put the bridge/neck way too far to the left for my comfort. I hugely prefer my Jazz Bass, even over other basses that I like
(like the Ibanez stuff, which is decent, and I don't mind the feel or the sound, and can play them if one is loaned to me) but don't fully love enough to own one.
