I bought 1 GB of Memory, which not only did I not have room for, more inspection from my nerdy friend lead to the fact that I don't need more memory, but actually need a better CPU. When I record (using Reaper) I also use Impulses, and Superior Drummer. Now if I get 4 or 5 guitar layers, and drums going even without Impulses (and a bunch of other effects) watching performance in the Task Manager, when I play what i've recorded it reaches 100% immediately, and might play a minute or 2 minutes if im lucking, and then it kills it and it makes a bunch of jumbled noise that I have to listen to until it finally decides to stop completely. When I record the ONLY programs I have open are Reaper, PODfarm, and (maybe)Reason as a VST for keyboard parts(which my computer Really hates).
I've got 2GB of Ram, my processor is an AMD Athlon 2650e 1.6GHz, I do unfortunately have Vista, which I have changed so it looks and acts like XP, no fancy buttons or windows, which I thought helped a little, but not enough to make my recording go any smoother.
Is there anything I can do to make it run faster other than getting a new CPU? (Which apparently isn't as simple as swapping the old one out and the new one in.)
Well, your 2650 is an old socket and a very difficult replace, and I can definitely see how you'd be bottlenecking there.
One possibility is to try picking up an internal sound card to offload some of the processing to the controller there. You can get some of the X-Fi cards pretty cheaply now.
