Default Mattayus: My grunge/hard rock side-project, come check out the 1st song!

So i wanted a bit of a break from the 7 string heavy heavy proggy stuff, and decided to take a dip back into the early 90's, where a part of my fanboyism resides!!

So anyway, I'm doing it with a friend who's doing the vocals (not done yet unfortunately), and we're called God The Bounty Hunter.

Here be the myspace - MySpace.com - God The Bounty Hunter - St.Ives/Huntingdon, UK - Rock / Grunge / Funk - www.myspace.com/godthebountyhunter

Here be the soundclick - SoundClick artist: Mattayus - Traditional heavy metal with a twist of prog, influenced by thrash and power metal with added groove

Ok, gear time!

This is the one and only song I recorded using my RG3EX1 which I sold recently. It had a Bill Lawrence L500XL which REALLY needed taming in the high end as you can probably hear. I dont think i used the neck pickup, which was a Dimarzio Breed incidentally.

I used the Criminal patch on the podxt, with a marshall impulse. I wanted more of a creamy tone, rather than my normal hollow djenty metal one. I think i got it ok, but it could do with some work.

Anyway, lemme know what you think!

- Matt

Not bad! The guitar tone is quite a bit brighter than I remember most tones from that era being, though. It doesn't sound bad at all; I just tend to think of smoother and thicker tones like the ones in Soundgarden. Cool song, though.

Yeah, as I said, i really need to work on the tone. It's just finding that right impulse. I need something fatter, with much less attack. On the pod it sounded ok, so i just turned the cabs off and assumed I'd find a good impulse. Still on the hunt though...

Yeah, it's definitely brighter and cleaner than some of the Grunge from the era, but I like it regardless of what it's labeled as.

Well yeah I mean to be honest I shouldn't have labelled it a grunge project, because it's not strictly. It's just influenced by some of the grunge bands i listened to growing up, so don't get too hung up on what it SHOULD sound like :P

Most 'grunge' tones were fucking horrible anyway!

Saying that, I'm still not happy with the tone for what it is. I wanted something hard-rock-like, like mid-era Ozzy, or Alice In Chains. They were labelled 'grunge' i guess but tone-wise were more metal if you ask me. But i didn't want it TOO metal... otherwise it would just sound like everything else i do

Try to find a good impulse with some G12T-75 speakers. That should point things in the right direction.

You need either A) a more Marshall-y sound, or B) a distortion pedal (model) in front of that. It's way, way too tight, Matt. (That said, I love the tone, but yeah, it's definitely metal.) Go listen to some old Soundgarden, or maybe my fucking man Jake E . lee for those two types of sounds.

The song is sweet. reminds me of shit from the movie 'Rockstar', which totally had a grunge-meets-80's metal vibe. I could sing the shit out of some stuff with that kind of sound, man.

I love the song title. Pretty brutal song too, I like that heavy groove riffage and the tone is tight. Nice work as always!

Ya know actually, perhaps recording it with the tubescreamer off would have been a better option, because as you say... it's a bit too tight. Why didn't I think of that!

Well i tried it, and hated it. I think I'm liking this tone as it is. It's very different from my metal stuff, even though it is quite metal, but i still think it fits this really well .

However, i low-pass filtered the guitars and they're much less cranked sounding and less fizzy.
