Okay, so Nolly's freaking ridiculously awesome recordings made me go back and work on my mixes. As most of you know, I suck at this, and it doesn't help that I have cheap Logitech speakers that make it very hard to mix. However, I would really like your opinions on how it sounds.
Here is a list of things I did to try to make my mixes better:
1) Drums are not all at the same velocities. I tried to make things I wanted to hit about 30 (velocities?) higher than nominal.
2) Guitars are EQ'ed in a way that "carves" out spots for drums to sit it. It isn't just a huge hump in the mids anymore
3) Kick is EQ'ed and compressed
I need the most help with kick drum EQ I think. I can hardly hear it most of the time, and then when I solo it, it sounds loud as all hell, which suggests to me that it is just getting clouded in the mix.
Here is the song where it is now, any advice would be very appreciated.
Thanks guys! Rep for those who help (and those I can rep)!
What drums are you using?
Try boosting around 8-11k on the kick to help it cut. Also with the compressor, about 5-10:1 ratio with a medium to fast attack and release (the attack and release are more to taste).
Also add a high and low pass to the guitars to let cymbals, kick, and bass fill up those frequencies.
Also, I liked the song, it had a very "forward-motion-head-grove" vibe
