My 4,5 year old computer has finally hit a wall :-). It won't run Superior Drummer 2 with 32 multichannel outputs. It's almost fine, but the CPU spikes and the sound crackles a bit. Computer's fine otherwise, never really feel it's slow.
So, I'm thinking about an upgrade. What PC hardware are you guys running SD on?
My current specs:
- Intel Core 2 Duo E6600
- 6 GB ram
- Windows 7 x64
I'm considering just getting a new CPU that fits my motherboard with Socket 775 (like a Core 2 Q9400 or something). Do you think that would be enough?
Completely new rig will have to wait, at least until christmas.
I used to run Superior Drummer 2 on a similar setup, though with Logic running on OS X and with only two gigs of RAM, and also 32 channels of output and a lot of plugins. No performance issues. Does Reaper have an audio buffer size setting? Have you tried increasing it?
As for the CPU upgrade, I recall reading that the first Core 2 motherboards are not compatible with the later Core 2 processors (though they use the same socket). I can't remember if a BIOS update fixes this, or if you'd need a motherboard with a more recent chipset to get it to work. It may be worthwhile to look into before pulling the trigger, but maybe you're more informed than me.
