Default Would like feedback on this one.

Hi guys. I'm working on a song from one of my bands, actually, the only thing I contributed to this was the solo, writing wise. They wrote this right before I "joined" them. But I actually have recorded and programmed everything heard here, and I'm looking for some feedback mix-wise. This is my basically first song with vocals, so I'm sorta stressing out about that. Also, The guitar tone is about where I like it actually, we aren't a very djenty band, so it might not totally be in place with a lot of the stuff here, but I'm sure you guys can point some stuff out and help me along, I'm certainly open to all suggestions.

Well, this got kinda long-winded , either way, here it is: SoundClick artist: Frank William Dremel - page with MP3 music downloads

(note, I'm not looking for charts or anything here, don't worry )

My only gripe honestly is the snare. It's a little weak sounding. That goes for drums in general really, what's the program you're using there? Sounds dry/plastic.

Vocals - Compression is your friend. Smash the shit out of those fuckers, and get them on a send to a room-verb. Maybe a spot of delay in places.

Thanks, Matt! Good to hear feedback from a guy with mixes as sick as your's !
Haha, you are absolutely right about the drums. Those are just temporary - I normally will reorganize them into a submix, and compress them all individually and all that stuff, and then give them some treatment as a bus..... right now they are totally dry, perfect timing, and velocity. I have actually gotten pretty go results with these in the past, if you want an example, you can check my song "Losing", you can get there by the link or I have a thread on here with it.

And about the vocals - Was that a general rule of thumb, or do you hear that my track needs it? I agree about the 'verb, I do have some, but could probably stand to bring it up some.
About the comp - If I look at the waveform, post-processed, it's pretty much flat. I'm squishing it quite a bit, but it could be with a different kind of comp - do you mean it should sound more "pump"-ish, like messing with the attack and release?. Right now I'm using PSP vintage warmer, but I could use a stillwell one or reacomp. Is there a certain one you recommend?

Woah, still getting long winded, I should call it a day. Thanks for the advice, I'll get on it ASAP!

Okay, I got a newer version up. Messed with the drums a lot, probably getting better... emphasis on probably

I'll work on this more when I can use big speakers in a environment that will enable me to be loud .

Yeah with the vocals, you have to think about it in terms of consistency. The human voice is possibly the most inconsistent and unstable instrument out of everything, so it has to be controlled the most.

So taking that into account, they need to be put in a space with as little dynamic movement as possible. Now I'm going to be talking VERY generally here, but it's just a platform for you to adjust to your mix accordingly. Start with a high ratio, about 8:1, fast attack (5-10ms) slowish release (150-300ms) and a really low threshold (-25db or more). You'll notice immediately that they will become "flattened" in a sense, or crushed, and this is what is going to even out the volume across the board. Put the EQ last in your chain, and you should be good to go.

Ok, I got a new version up (see link in post#1). did a metric ton of work on the drums and vocals. One thing I'll be working on later is more complementary EQ between the vocals and the rest of the mix. Kinda large-ish task, -not too happy with the way the vocals sit in the mix, might be a little muddy with the vox as well, I'll se what I can cut where. but at least they are plenty squashed (i think). so I may do it tomorrow, my ears are kinda fatigued.

Uploaded another update, did some stuff with complementary EQ, and will do some more by the time it's all said and done.
