I guessed as much. I think a lot of metal bands like distorted bass because they want the low end, but they want the riffs to just be really big where the left and right guitars merge into one and the bass blends into that too.

It sounds cool on the whole, but it's never been a bass sound I particularly care for. Totally understand why they go for it. When people complain "I can't hear the bass," they are wrong. They CAN hear the bass, but they just can't recognize it because it's absorbed into the overall sound which is dominated by guitars.
