I've decided to use my old Samsung 22" LCD monitor I've been keeping up in the closet. My laptop has two video outputs, HDMI and SVGA. The monitor only has SVGA and DVI-D, so I got an SVGA cable and connected it the old fashioned analog way.
So far so good, the computer and monitor work together perfectly.
But, when I hook up my input board and studio speakers, I'm hearing a 60 cycle hum. My first thought was ground loop but whether I plug the monitor into the same strip as everything else or just into the wall, I get the same issue. The only time the hum goes away is when I disconnect the VGA cable from the laptop. Everything still plugged in, everything still on. Hum goes away.
Anyone dealt with this? Any solutions? I've noticed the hum changes pitch when I view a darker or lighter colored website. Strange. I'm not hearing it come through on any instrument recording/tracking, so maybe I just crank the mains and deal with it. I dunno.
Here's the setup:
Actually, I am having almost this exact issue. My 25" Hanns-G, which was my primary, is now connected by HDMI to my iMac and is buzzing like this. It's plugged into my UPS, same as the iMac.
I'll try moving the power connection, see if it helps.
