57 + pop shield = 58. Vocals are quite often recorded with them, especially metal vocals (I'm 95% sure that Dez Fafara uses one, when he can use any (he is in the making of documentary for the last album anyway)).
And neither are very different from a 7.
Find a good place in the room and stand >6 inches from the mic to reduce proximity effect.
Mics dont know what they're recording, you never know whats gonna work unless you try. I recorded Mike (100HandSlap) wth an i5. It sounded better for him than my AT4050, 58 and MD421, and I didnt bother trying any others after hearing him through it.
CSB: I forget what album, but smashing pumpkins were going through vocal mic woes (I forget what album), so they gathered all the mics in the studio and rented more still. They had £30,000 in mics there, inc neuman, telefunken, big boy mics. They recorded each and then auditioned them blind to get the best for his voice. The 58 won.
