Why do most major studios use OSX/Mac for recording?

Just something I've noticed from casual observation is the vast majority of people in commercial recording studios use OSX/Macs for all their audio production. Yes I know their are exceptions to this I'm just making a general observation. Of course most of them use Pro Tools cause it's an industry standard of sorts and I can understand that...but since Pro Tools is available for Windows as well, why don't more studios use Windows? Is it because they always have used Macs and are comfortable with them? Is it because the platform somehow inherently is better for audio production than Windows? Is it better software or plugin support (ex. Logic is only available on Mac)? Is it hardware support for interfaces etc.? Help shed some light on me here. I know most people here use Reaper, as do I and I love it. I'm just curious why OSX/Mac is the de facto standard for commercial recording studios.

Wirelessly posted (
)Digidesign/Avid. Basically, Pro Tools, Logic, and all the first DAWs to make a name for themselves started as Mac only. Until the last couple years, those programs still ran far better on Mac than PC and updates for PC lagged far behind Mac. Beyond that, it's "if it ain't broke...". Why change when you already know what you know and have no complaints? |

I'd assume it's mainly them using what they know. Nothing wrong with that, both OS's do quite well with that sort of thing...

Much of the same reasons why the government still uses XP.

What Aaron said, really - Macs were hands down the best thing out there for audio work until even as recently as five years ago. PCs closed the gap, but if you've been using Macs for 10 years, why switch now?

Downtime is also the enemy of a business like a recording studio. Macs generally just keep on rolling with little maintenance at all.

It doesn't help that they are a million different permutations of a PC build, and there are a fraction of that for Mac. When Avid is approving what system works with what hardware, it's a much safer bet with Macs because there aren't so many damn variables.
Are you going to be the guy that thinks you got all the right components, and that nothing conflicts, or are you going to be the guy that just buys a Mac Pro because its actually been tested? |
