Just looking for advice on EQing bass, and especially using VSTs. For bass, I have Ampeg SVX, TSE B.O.D (sansamp), and a handful of impulses. The tone I would Really like to achieve is this:

I even tried replicating a picture of Doug's rig, and I can get the low end to sound right, but I cannot find the mid range growl. I've done a lot of research, and Doug has said that that tone was actually a 4 string and Not the 12 string like many believed it was.
How do I achieve that midrange growl? What frequency range is it in? I cannot seem to find it. When I try, my low end sounds right, but the highs are too over driven and have too much highs.
Is part of it your bass? Some basses are smoother than growly.
I feel bass growl is between like 250 and 800 Hz. Try sweeping through your tone with a tight boost and find the growl. Consider gently scooping your guitars at that frequency.
Also consider a parallel track of slightly distorted bass to color the tone.
