Default Cwelter916 Noob Help Thread

Hello Everyone,

I wanted to start this thread so I have one place to post all my questions that I may run across and have it easily at my hands to access. I will start off my first post with my setup I'm currently running.

-Hp Based computer
-AMD Phenom IIx4 960t Processor 3.0GHZ
-8 GB of ram
-Soundblaster audigy 2 24bit sound card. (I know soundblaster blah! but it was free so I took it)
-Over 4000GB of harddrive space( internals and externals)
-Windows 7 operating system 64 bit.

-Sonar X1 64bit edition w/ current up to date releases.
-Superior Drummer 2.0 metal foundry with all various updates and etc..
-Massive amounts of plugins and such too much to list.

-Yamaha HS80M Monitors(I wanna say thanks to metalguitarist video on youtube for helping me select these monitors much appreciated guys!)
-Tascam us122 interface to plug in guitars and midi and mics etc....)

Wanted to start off by just asking around seeing if you all have some good guides saved and such for recording 101 just wanting to brush up on some stuff maybe more guides aimed at metal if any exist. I have been at this for a year now and made numerous mistakes cause I didn't take time to read alot so I'm going to read whatever I can.

Thanks,
Chris

Ran into a new issue if any sonar users are out there this one is for you. So I was getting everything installed and set up and I'm running into a problem with my tascam us-122. I am trying to only use the tascam as an input device because when I connect my monitors as out from the tascam I have horrible fuzz so I would like to just use my soundblaster audigy 2 for output.

Problem is when I am in sonar with the tascam connect it greys out all my outputs for the soundblaster card. How do I go about getting sonar to see my output of my soundblaster card. This never was a problem till i connect the tascam.

As far as good guides, this is recommended all over the place on here:

REAPER 4 Unleashed by Geoffrey Francis (Paperback) - Lulu

It's fantastic. It's based on Reaper, but most of it can apply to any DAW.

Thank you for this Chris I will get this.

Do have a question for you all I'm using my tascam us122 and I'm getting some pretty good feed back through my monitors. Its not too loud at all just a light fuzz that never goes away. I'm worried about when we use this to record guitars this will be an issue.

Does anyone think I should upgrade my tascam us122?

What are your levels set to? Is the volume on your monitors cranked? Recording is all about levels, and it's definitely a science. What are your input levels at, and how much headroom do you have on the tracks vs. the master bus?

The US122 is generally considered a pretty good little unit, so I don't think that's the problem. If you record a quick blurb of a track and play it back, is the fuzz still there? (And is it there if you bounce it down to an MP3 and play it on an iPod, or in your car, etc?)
