Alright, so here's my newest version:

http://soundcloud.com/fhamilton/triple-pancakes

I took a lot of the advice in here and I think it's definitely a lot more solid than it was. Is it perfect? Not by any stretch of the imagination, but it's unquestionably better.

I took Josh's idea (thanks again, dude) and sort of melded it in with the "Ola distort one track and leave only mids" idea and that worked pretty well. I scooped a little bit of 500hz out of the bass bus and put more emphasis on the lower mids/lows and the upper mids for the growl. I'm also using a different plugin than the regular Logic bass amp.

Let me know what you guys think! You've been a ton of help so far, I realllly appreciate it.

EDIT: I also spiced up the drum part a little since last night, but that's all that's been changed. I've purposely kept everything the same otherwise.

It's definitely better!

It is still kind of "muffled", like it's being recorded through a door, though. You're now getting more of the note information, so you can hear that there are different pitches being played, but it's still coming in a little muddy and compressed, and could use a little more "attack". I think you might have just a little too much gain/overdrive going on.

This guy also gives you a bit of indication of where to start with EQ points. Don't roll off the treble too soon! Mixing Metal

Obviously each mix is different, but to my ears you could definitely use a bit more up top and a little less "mush" in the gain. The nice thing about a moderately driven Ampeg-style tone is that the midrange distorts and "growls" while the bass and treble remain relatively clear. Also, are you playing pickstyle or fingerstyle?

Too much focus leads to tunnel vision
Too much faith leads to religion
Too much knowledge leads to confusion
Too many guitar lessons lead to jazz-fusion

I haven't read the link yet, but it's the next thing I intend to do.

In terms of compression; there's none whatsoever outside of whatever the amp/gain is doing this time around. I liked it a lot better that way for sure. The next thing I'm thinking about trying is actually one of the Ampeg plugins to see how that works, so it's cool that you mention that.

I'm playing with a pick for this one. My fingerstyle is so horribly inconsistent, I wouldn't want it recorded at this point.

Here's a screenshot of what I've got going on for the bass stuff now:
Top left is the bass amp plugin
Bottom middle is the distorted bass track and it's EQ
Top right is the bass bus EQ (only thing active on the bus)
