How the hell do you do it?
I have a bass track that is starting to sound pretty close to the way I want it. The problem is, it only sounds good when I'm playing the lower registers. As soon as I get up the fretboard a bit the bottom drops out (pardon the pun).
I've tried compressing/limiting a variety of different ways, but I either end up squashing it too much, making the low registers too boomy, or just making a mess.
Do you guys who are actually good at this use volume automation, and just turn it up a few db?
I am going to assume that it's not a problem with the song writing / arrangement. If the bottom drops out because you're playing a high note, well, that's because it's a high note not a low note.
If what you're asking is how to keep the bass (not the low end, but the bass guitar) consistent, either use automation or the Waves bass rider plugin.
