I wanted to know how you guys usually record and mix bass at home for high gain music (modern metal, punk, hardcore). I've got a few options but don't really know what to do. DI, Clean or gain, amps, plugins, digital processors, EQ preferences etc.
Right now I just mix the DI with an amp signal (SV Bass in AxeFX II) like I do for most genres. I figured I should try asking some other people though and see what else is out there.
When recording myself I just use the built in di from my bass amp. I'm pretty good at getting the eq mostly where I want just using the fixed 5 band on it and then will just do some slight eqing in post if it's eating up a particular freq range in the mix. I also may dial some attack in by boosting around 2k if I pulled too much out using the eq on my amp (I like a really smooth bass tone and sometimes I go too far).
When recording others I'll use a clean di straight from the bass. If they want some grit I'll use a sansamp plug in or di with a sansamp psa1. Then it's just a matter of trimming the bass down into something that does not totally eat up the mix as I tend to ride basses pretty hot in my mixes (I started as a bass player and can't stand when bass parts can't be heard).
Compression varies player to player. If they use a pick or are sloppy I generally use a limiter and mess around with the threshold until I get it in a spot I like. Sometimes using automation (or when using hardware I'll print seperate sections with different settings) if one section needs less compression than another.
With myself and and finger players who use dynamics I'll use a crossover usually somewhere between the 180 and 240 range depending on the song. Then I'll limit the lows and either hardly compress the highs or leave them go entirely.
