I started this little riff earlier just to record my new bass I got today, and I just kept going with little additions along the way. Turns out I've written the intro, A section and B section of a new song (although it sounds very derivative, like something from a Petrucci solo album).
Anyhow, the mix sounds surprisingly good to me. It sounds better than any mixes I've done before (I don't claim to be a Mattayus or MDV at mixing, though), and calling it a mix is stretching the word a bit. I've done virtually nothing.
The guitars have no processing done, this is just my VH4 patch. The drums are just Metal Machine with a Slate kick and snare. The bass is AFX with a Darkglass tone match ( the "fat + flat" one), with all the bass's controls set flat. The only plug-in is O-Zone using one of the Rock presets, which seems to do a tiny bit of EQ and some maximising.
After all that, you may say it sounds like nonsense. But it's sounding ok on my monitors. It's probably clipping, but I haven't touched any levels.
Oh, and ignore the lead, which is a Petucci Tone Match patch. I did a take of the intro riff doubled up an octave higher and just left it running and noodled about for a bit.
Edit: Updated mix:
This kicks fucking ass dude. Record a solo album, and I'll buy the shit out of it.
Also, WTB that rhythm/bass patch, por favor.
