So I have a copy of podfarm and some of the poulin plugins. I want to beable to sit on my couch and direct record into my computer. But I'm having latency issues.
My audio interface is a m-audio fast track usb into reaper. I'm getting way to much latency to record anything. I go to the recording devices icon on the windows toolbar and click the "listen to this device" box and I'm getting about half the latency. Its still too much to record anything with. From the headphone jack on the AI itself, i get no latency.
What the hell can i do? Do i just need to pickup a better interface? Is there some buffer I can change?
It can be a few things.
First make certain (it should be automatic, but check to be sure) that reaper is using the maudios ASIO.
I dont know if the maudio has such a thing, but you can try to demand a certain buffer size from the interface in reaper. Its in the preferences next to the sample rate under audio device settings I think (I just go to it on autopilot, cant remember the exact path). Lower is better. Its also more likely to drop out if something in there cant handle it.
If your buffer is 128 or lower then you should be fine. If not then its probably one of the VSTs causing the latency. Try a DI on its own and see if you have the same issues and add the amp, IR loader and cabs one at a time and see where it screws up.
Some IR loaders can cause massive latency problems. Though, I havent found lecab to be one of them (default buffer is 64 bits, iirc, and it responds basically instantly).
And make sure your IR sample rates and bit depths are matched to the project, and the projects matched to the hardware.
And use this to see that your basic audio processing is man enough and stable. DPC Latency Checker
Just because you have an interface doesnt always make it so. I've seen some horrible performance on that from budget interfaces.
