Wanted to come on here and ask this for anyone with experience in electronic drum sets. Currently I am using a very cheap electronic drum set in my studio set up its the yamaha set that usually retails around $500. Im looking to upgrade and have found myself in a hard spot I have read different forums but figured I'd ask on here also to get everyone's opinions. Right now my decisions are between the Yamah DTX 790K and the Yamaha DTX950K I'm not concerned at all about the actual modules sounds as i trigger everything through superior drummer. So having said that which route do you think I should go? Is there anything that really constitutes the price difference between jumping up to a 950k?
I don't know anything about Yamaha drums, but I have a pretty solid Roland kit. I can't comment on those two models, but I will offer the following: If I had to do it over again, I'd have built my kit piece by piece instead of ordering a complete base kit and then doing the inevitable upgrades.
I spent around $2000 new for it (the Roland TD4 kit with mesh heads and a DW3000 double kick pedal). Then I spent about another $2000 upgrading all of the shit that wasn't very good, and adding on kit pieces that I needed. The most important (and expensive) pieces to look at IMO are the hats and the snare. I paid something like $400 for my hats (the Roland V-11), another couple hundred on a good stand, and then maybe $500 more on a proper 12" snare.
After that, I bumped all of my toms up to 10" from 8", leaving me with half a stand, a useless stock hi-hat and a bunch of 6"/8" mesh triggers that I ended up ebaying. I probably would have saved at least 5-600 bucks if I just built it from scratch. I don't use the sounds in the head either, and again in hindsight I'd just buy a 12 or 16 channel midi brick and run it all via Superior.
Anyway, not sure how useful all of that is, but that's my .2c.
Here's my kit for reference.
