Well I've got a new project on the horizon and it involves a female vocalist along the lines of Alissa from The Agonist/Arch Enemy. I was lucky to pick up a Presonus VXP channel strip for $80 today and am gonna start using that for tracking with. Now, my thing is I have no money for buying new mics so I need to make a choice. In my mic cupboard at present I have a Neumann TLM103 and Rode NT1 (not the 1A) for large diaphragm condensers, an SM57 and SM58 for the small diaphragm dynamics and just acquired an MD421 in a trade for some gear. So I'll be using the condensors on some softer parts and singing bits but probably a large dynamic for the growls.
Do I keep the 421 or trade it for an SM7? I've not recorded female vocals in this style before so ideally want to make sure I have the right mic. If I had the spare cash id just buy an SM7 and have that too as I used both equally previously on vocals and always loved a 421 on a V30.

The SM7 is a pretty solid go-to for aggressive vocals. The 421 would probably work well, also. I've never compared them for that situation. I do love a 421 on guitar, though, especially when blended with a 57.
