Yeah, definitely skip BIAS. Get these free sims:
    TSC 1.1
    TSE 808
    TSE X30
    TSE X50
    Poulin LeCto
    Poulin Le456
    Poulin HyBrit
    Poulin Legion

These should cover the majority of the most popular tonal options you'd want for metal. After that, get keFIR and LeCab (keFIR is more accurate but LeCab lets you load more than one impulse), get the free Sperimental impulse pack, God's Cab, and then maybe throw down the $10 on RedWirez ENGL cab.
    ESP DV8-R
    Ibanez RG3550MZ
    ENGL Savage 60
    Mesa Rectifier Traditional

    Hellevate
    Ealo

I really like BIAS, and for $60 I don't think it's a bad deal. But yeah, the free stuff is really cool too.

Definitely get the focusrite. They give you free plugins from other companies every month. I've already got over $1000 worth of plugins from them. The softube bundle is my favorite so far and the Addictive Keys is free for life from them.

oh this is the new one this month. They released a really simple version of bias a few months ago. I guess they decided to do an upgrade. I wonder how focusrite can afford to do this because my $100 backup interface has gained me so many new plugins

    Free stuff is definitely cool.

I downloaded the TSE and Poulin plugins (along with KeFIR and God's Cab) and played around with them for a while, and I still think I prefer the tone I get from Bias. The thing I'm hearing from a lot of amp sims is that they're either really muffled sounding (Amplitube was bad for this), or kind of shrill and digital, and Bias got me to a sound that's more organic and open than the others with minimal tweaking. I'll play around with other cab impulses with the free stuff (since there's a huge difference between the Recabinet cabs and the God's Cab cabs and I want to hear what else is out there), but right now I'm inclined to say 60 is worth it for Bias.

If y'all are interested, I'll upload the riff I'm using to play around going through each option so you can hear what I'm hearing.
