I'm just starting to learn drum programming with "real" software. (Was using Hydrogen + Audacity in Linux for ages.) I've got Reaper set up with the Addictive Drums demo as a VSTi. I can copy and MIDI-edit the beats that come with Addictive Drums, but it's time consuming. Any tips? Has anyone ever tried using a drum pad to lay down a basic track that they later modify in a MIDI editor?
Here's one possible drum pad I was considering:

Here's an example:

I tend to play drums in on my MIDI keyboard (sometimes doing cymbals and drums separately) and then editing the MIDI programming afterwards. That way, I don't have to point-and-click every single beat in (saves time/is easier) and yet still get the point-and-click precision.
My dream would be having a Roland V-Drum kit set up for programming the MIDI in and doing minimal editing after the fact.
