Default The death of moderate Republicans

Analysis: An autopsy of liberal Republicans - CNN.com

A very interesting read about how the GOP's "southern strategy" paved the road to the devastation they are dealing with today.

Chris Matthews recently mentioned the two things that have really kicked the Republicans in the ass recently, one is this southern strategy and bringing in all the old Dixiecrats that were totally put off by civil rights. The other was that they became beholden to the evangelical religious right. Both of these move drove away moderates in droves. Like the author says whether they shift back towards center or star entrenched will dictate how successful they are in future elections.

New England no longer has a single GOP representative in the House. The 29-member New York House delegation has only three Republicans.
Wow. If that's not a big indicator that something is wrong, then I don't know what is. New Hampshire has historically been a bit of a conservative island in New England, and they've had at least one Republican House member as long as I can remember.

A completely subjective discussion of semantics? Awesome!

Goldwater knew that sleeping with the fundies would bring bad things. The fact that nobody else did makes it impossible to believe in anyone running anything in the GOP.

I was hoping that Obama's election would make the GOP realize that it's time to stop being a bunch of blathering morons and actually do something useful... damn my childish tendencies to believe that someone out there can actually *think*...

In fact, Cheney just this week said it would be a mistake for the GOP to become more moderate.

Have fun marching lockstep towards irrelevance, you zany conservatives!

To America as a whole? Depends. In terms of shaping policy, or even the national discourse, no, not really I'd say.

But to the uber-fringe right that the modern GOP is becoming? I'd warrant he has some influence and importance. Fat lot of good that it does them.
