Default BP on hook for $20BB in escrow fund for damages

Gulf oil spill: White House, BP agree on $20 billion fund to compensate gulf oil spill victims - latimes.com

I have no idea how to price such a thing, but I hope this is enough to cover the impact on Gulf residents.

If BP "agrees" to it, then I doubt it's enough.

Destroyed economies and ecosystems = $20 Billion?

It seems low to me too, but I'm no expert. Drew? You there?

It's really low considering they can be liable for up to 750 billion in damages.

I don't have nearly the info I'd need to make even a ballpark guestimate, but considering BP's current market capitalization is almost exactly 100 billion, it's worth considering that whether or not this is "enough" they're talking about giving 20% of their entire net worth to clean up the area.

I mean, this isn't a perfect example, but imagine forking over 20% of your future expected salary, value of your home, retirement account, car, guitar collection, etc. It's a fair amount of money, probably way more than they have cash on hand, and it'd be tough to push for much more without bankrupting them, I'd imagine.

Consider it a good start, if nothing else.

No, by law, an oil company only has to pay $75 MILLION plus clean up fees.

By law BP could pay the couple of billion for the cleanup, $75 million fine, then walk away. They are paying up for this because they still want oil contracts in the US and contracts to operate which together are well over $20 billion.

BP is an enormous company and could easily pay double or triple this amount and still be very viable.
