Quite the interesting bit of musical trivia knowledge. Its a long video (~20mins) but its kinda worth it IMO. Very interesting bit of musical pop culture.
While that was an interesting video, I kept thinking "It's a decent drum beat, but is it really that great? GEEEEEEZ. How can hip hop and jungle beats not get sick of it?"
Surprisingly enough, when I first heard it in that video, I immediately associated it with car commercials since I think they use it the most "as it is" with no vocals and no other instruments.
As easily identifiable as that sample is, I'd say Bonzo's main rhythm figure in "When the Levee Breaks" was more important. I've heard that beat in a billion hip hop and rap songs.
Overused to be sure... that and the 808 kick need to fucking die in electronic music. They were never that great to begin with and they're officially tired as a Valium stuffed, elderly man with slow metabolism.
