As some of you might have known I got made redundant a few weeks ago, but managed to get another job with a bit of a pay cut. So, I thought I'd flog my current car as it's worth around £3000 and buy something cheaper but still reliable. In particular an E39 BMW 5 series, since I used to have one.
So, last week I spotted a very clean looking 528i auto estate (no the biggest auto fan, but at my budget I'll let that slide for condition) at £1500. I'd enough left from my redundancy to pay for that and figured I'd flog my Signum quickly and this way we'd avoid the risk of being without a car right as my wife is due to give birth. Took a look on Saturday and it was so nice I put a deposit on it there and arranged to pick it up on Sunday. So far, so good.
Sunday morning I head over to pick my Dad up as he's going to drive the BMW back for me since my insurance company isn't open at weekends and I can't insure it for me to drive until the Monday. The Signum obviously knows it's going to be sold, it decides to start slipping it's clutch. We manage to get the BMW ok, but halfway home the Signum's clutch self destucts and we have to be recovered by a very nice man from the RAC.
Now, had the bastard thing even given me a modicum of a suggestion that the clutch was about to go, I would've fixed it first and then looked for a new car. Now I'm stuck with at least a £620 bill for a new clutch (amazingly the cheapest option I could find, Vauxhall wanted over £1000!), and hoping to god it's not damaged the hydraulic slave cylinder or worse yet the dual mass flywheel. If the flywheel's fucked I might as well break the car, I'd make more that way than fixing it and selling afterwards. The flywheel is a £700 part on it's own.
Oh, and I don't have the £620 to fix the clutch, as I bought a BMW thinking my Signum was in fine health and could be sold within a couple of weeks

I had to eat about $5k on my current car loan due to still owing $5k on my last car when the CVT trans started to go. It was either fix it for $4.5k or scrap it.
