Saturday I became the proud owner of a new beast. Itís a 2003 BMW 530d Sport with just 92,000 miles on the clock, and itís virtually immaculate. The only down points are bit of trim loose on a door (broken clip, but Iím going to swap the wood trim for something nicer anyway), a couple of cracked buttons on the air con (easy swap) and an intermittent hot start problem that only showed up after I got it home. But I bought from a dealer and heís going to deal with that for me.
Itís another auto, but manualís are sadly really rare and the BMW auto box is faster shifting than most and has a sequential manual mode. Quite frankly the spec on this is unreal. Scarily, this is still many options off top spec too!
That big spec is:
3.0l turbo diesel
Sport model (big bumpers, sport wheels & suspension, black roof lining, sports wheel and 5-way adjustable sports seats)
Xenon ďangel eyeĒ headlights with auto-light option
Widescreen sat nav with TV option (well, until they switch off the analogue signal tomorrow
DSC stability control (all singing, all dancing jobbie which makes this handle virtually as well as my old Type R Civic)
Front & rear parking sensors (handy for letting the wife loose in it)
Telephone prep (will be sorting out making my iPhone work with that & adding iPod input)
Tape deck behind the screen (anyone still use tapes?)
Check control (basically does all the weekly checks on bulbs, brakes, fluids etc for you!)
Dual zone climate control
Electric mirrors with auto-dip function
Self-levelling rear suspension
Auxiliary fuel burning heater for those cold winter mornings
In an ideal world Iíd have liked one with heated seats/front screen (diesel donít warm up as fast, even with the heater) and built in sun blinds for the kids, but Iíll be having the rear windows tinted to solve that one anyway. Iím definitely ditching the wood trim ASAP though, Iíve had two SEís with the wood now and really want something different, plus sports have aluminium look inserts as standard. Iím torn between the aluminium or the black titanium option, but itíll probably come down to whateverís cheaper. Also high on the list is losing the swirl flaps before they snap and grenade my engine and cleaning out/deactivating the EGR system.
