    NCD: 04 Golf TDI

    2004 VW Golf

Picking this up today, been shopping TDI's yesterday and today. There are so many in really terrible shape its absurd. The mileage is a little higher but it had its timing belt and water pump done at 100k, gives me a year or two before I have to get that done again. New brakes, newish tires, the ride is fantastic, suspension feels great. Transmission shifts great and power is very good (better than the Jetta's I tried with the same engine), just a really well taken care of car. The owners are an older couple who don't have a need for it now that they're getting crochety

I'll have better pictures later, after I wash it (it rained yesterday so there's lots of water spots on it)... I hate the wheels so much though

Finding these used with reasonable mileage is a challenge, because most people buy them for the express purpose of doing lots of long highway drives. But at least highway driving is easier on the whole vehicle than mostly city driving. These are great cars... the Golfs of this generation are WAY better put together than the Jettas were. Mine was made in Germany or Austria, i believe... i think at some point they may have started making these in Brazil for the North American market.

    Great score!
    Lousy 90s wheels!

In the Mark IV generation, the Jetta became really popular with young women. Consequently, they outnumber Golfs by nearly four to one. TDIs in North America were fairly rare, and most predominantly came in Passats. As Darren said, most TDI owners keep them for a really long time, since you can rack up the miles. That is why it is such a difficult car to find.
