View Full Version : Song a Week Challenge, Season 1, Week 4

7 Dying Trees

Into Week 4 of this season, we have one elimination (still more than welcome to contribute!)

Still in the running are:
Iron1
TheKindred
scole (back from the dead)
7 Dying Trees
T Gobbs

Rules:
1) Submissions by end of play 1st of February
2) Even if noone can check, the spirit is writing a song a week
3) No rules on genre, you don't even need to do the same style next week
4) Must be a song, unless you have a very (and I mean the kind that is beyond the ability of mere mortals) good argument for playing the same riff for 3+ minutes it won't fly
5) Entries composed on a tascam or without drums, whatever, also welcome, this is about writing a song, not dressing it up in lipstick and a short skirt
6) If you don't submit, you're eliminated (but you can still keep on submitting anyway as practice, this way the competitives get to be competitive, and the less so inclined still get to join in).

We will not:
1) Make people feel bad about mixing skills by turning this into a mixtest competition, it's about getting a load of us writing to a deadline, this is about writing, not about how awesome your headless kiesel sounds through an axe fx with superior drummer
2) Make people feel bad about how well it's recorded
3) Spam thread with songs we've had lying around for ages or anything non relevant to this competition and it's rules
4) Discourage anyone from participating
5) Tell anyone they suck. Songwriting is a skill, you learn it, some people will be better, others worse, this isn't a pissing competition
6) Steal others work or ideas.

This one just flowed out, but kinda lost some spark along the way in writing it... but, it qualifies me for another week.

Hell yeah dude. There's some really awesome rhythm playing in there!

The intro/first part of the song reminds me a bit of a soundtrack from a late 80s movie (I think it was Hardware?) that was atmospheric and kinda creepy.

And I'm in. This week's tune is Ratt inspired and came together pretty quickly overall. I had to re-write the pre-chorus/bridge because the clean guitar part had some conflicting notes I had to remedy. The first half of the solo came together quick but the back half was more of a struggle. What's there will have to do for now. :metal:

Thanks brutha! I'm definitely no lead guy, but think I can hold my own as a singer-turned-rhythm-guitarist...

Nice! Now I'll have to go back and watch that movie.

I love early Ratt - and love this too. They were one of the only hair bands I ever truly loved. Now ya need some raspy/bluesy/Pearcy type vocals on it. :metal:

This ended up being a lot jankier than I'd like, but it's in. Went in trying to shamelessly rip off gojira, and things devolved from there. Didn't have time to really mix at all, so sorry if this causes anyone physical pain.

Can definitely hear the Gojira influence. Good stuff!

Great work guys!

Thanks! Are you getting back in?

I probably should. It's funny I appear stuck on the barely started nonsense from my last week.... which appears to have turned into most of my previous attempts to record stuff!

Great work, everyone!

Not sure when I'll be able to make it back in. I'm pretty bummed I fell off a couple weeks ago. I find out Monday what's going on with work, I think no matter what happens, my workload will be changed for the better, so hopefully another week or so and I can get back in the studio to write/record instead of plugging in my guitar, noodling for 10 minutes, shutting it off and passing out on the cocuh.
