View Full Version : Song a Week Season2: Week 5

Week 5, remember, no eliminations, everyone welcome to join in, in fact, with just one entry you can match the score of 2 participants!

Nick managed 2 songs last week, so is now deservedly in the lead.

Scores after week 4 are as Follows:

Nick: 45 Points
Iron1: 40 points
7 Dying Trees: 40 points
Markus: 40 points
Connor : 20 points
Rev Drucifer: 10 points
Blankplank: 10 points

The rest of MG.org: a 2002 meshuggah album

Instead of eliminations, we will work like thus:

We'll attempt to submit one song a week.

- The first scores you 10 points.
- The second in a week scores you 5 points
- The third, 2 points
- The fourth 1 point, and 1 point for every further song.

If you miss a week, you score 0 points, but, it allows everyone to keep playing until the end. It means people falling ill or ending up with heavy workloads don't get eliminated due to bad luck, and it also means people can start and join in whenever, and play a bit of catch up if they want. 10 points is an incentive to submit weekly, but if something happens, and it's late, you can still play a little catch up.

We'll keep a rolling tally all the way through to week 8, at which point someone will be rewarded with the coveted season 2 crown(*)

Rules:
1) All Submissions by end of play 10th of May
2) Even if noone can check, the spirit is writing a song a week
3) No rules on genre, you don't even need to do the same style next week
4) Must be a song, unless you have a very (and I mean the kind that is beyond the ability of mere mortals) good argument for playing the same riff for 3+ minutes it won't fly
5) Entries composed on a tascam or without drums, whatever, also welcome, this is about writing a song, not dressing it up in lipstick and a short skirt
6) If you don't submit, you're don't score points.
7) Remember that quality outstrips quantity, don't just post up tons of rubbish to try and win, we're doing this to get writing, someone winning the coveted season 2 crown is a bonus(*)
8) Mixtests don't count, there's another forum for that (ss.org)
9) Submissions to be posted as soundcloud links

We will not:
1) Make people feel bad about mixing skills by turning this into a mixtest competition, it's about getting a load of us writing to a deadline, this is about writing, not about how awesome your headless kiesel sounds through an axe fx with superior drummer
2) Make people feel bad about how well it's recorded
3) Spam thread with songs we've had lying around for ages or anything non relevant to this competition and it's rules
4) Discourage anyone from participating
5) Tell anyone they suck. Songwriting is a skill, you learn it, some people will be better, others worse, this isn't a pissing competition
6) Steal others work or ideas.

Lastly, when commenting on other peoples work:

(*) crown may not be real and instead be made of internet kudos

I just got finished producing an original song for an artist so I've been MIA with this. Should be officially released end of the month. I got paid so I couldn't turn it down.

That is awesome, and a more than valid excuse!:yesway:

Well, it's not my best work. Far from it. But the artist was so happy with it and that makes me feel good.

I'm early this time. I have a work trip coming up later this week so had to get this ready ASAP. Not as happy with this as the previous two, but it's not terrible I guess.

Here's my entry for the week - dig it a lot more than the garbage I submitted for last week's entry, but it still needs work. And, man, do I need to learn how to play some lead stuff...

That section at 1:15 is sinister! The whole thing is pretty wicked sounding

mish mash attempting something with orchestral crap. Not sure it worked that well. Bored of it, so no energy to do anything with it... anyway, this is getting tough now, and I am seriously running out of ideas with week 5!

This is awesome. I can easily see someone like Stu Block singing on it because it can go from power metal to death metal to black metal really quickly.

Thanks! Glad ya like it. The funny thing is the part at 1:15 is what I was thinking about with my "need to learn to play leads" comment cause I can hear a better lick there but couldn't pull it off so I went minimalistic with it instead.

Dig it, as always. Somewhere there's a gang of goth girls waiting to groupie up around you.

This might be the most creative entry I've heard yet - I could definitely listen to a whole album of this, especially with a really dynamic singer who can switch between clean, mild breakup and full on Opeth growls. But, I get ya when you say you lost interest and how tough it's getting to keep coming up with fresh stuff - I felt like I was totally out of gas last week, then the main riff to my entry this week popped into my head. So, keep trying brutha, you're putting out solid tunes we want to listen to!

I wrote a pop song this week, and I'm posting it late in hopes that no one listens to it.

The metal returns next week, give me my ten points and move along :smoking:

I wouldn't call this pop because it has a mainstream sound to it. The arrangement and drums are closer to prog rock even though it isn't heavy. This is really cool though. I dig it. What did you use for the synths?

There are almost no synths used, except toward the end. It's just really heavily processed guitars for the most part. The synth that I did use is part of the Kontakt stuff, I'd have to look it up to be more specific.

You heard the man, give him his ten points.

Love the dynamic range of song writing you have, brutha. No way I could have ever done anything like that & I admire folks who can.

I appreciate that, man. By the same token, I can't write an album's worth of material in the same genre to save my life

It's cool to hear something totally different. The sounds you got out of your guitars there was really cool. In some parts the atmosphere reminds me a bit of Mew (a Danish pop-rock band)

Good stuff - in the slow parts in the beginning there's this feel of impending doom, and then the heaviness kicks in.
