So, whilst we have a break from writing songs, here's a cover challenge. The aim is to cover a song a week, learn, write, record. The aim here is that not everyone wants to write a song (or has time) a week. So instead, this is about covers. We'll either run until song a week starts again, or 8 weeks, depends how many people participate and how popular this is.

We'll attempt to cover one song a week.

- The first scores you 10 points.
- The second in a week scores you 7 points
- The third, 5 points
- The fourth 2 point, and 1 point for every further song.

Submissions to be posted as soundcloud links, or as a youtube video

If you miss a week, you score 0 points, but, it allows everyone to keep playing until the end. It means people falling ill or ending up with heavy workloads don't get eliminated due to bad luck, and it also means people can start and join in whenever, and play a bit of catch up if they want. 10 points is an incentive to submit weekly, but if something happens, and it's late, you can still play a little catch up.

We'll keep a rolling tally all the way through to week 8, at which point someone will be rewarded with the coveted season 3 crown(*)

Rules:
1) All Submissions by end of play 20th of October. We will run monday to sunday.
2) Even if noone can check, the spirit is covering a song a week
3) No rules on genre, you don't even need to do the same style next week
4) No rules on how exact the cover is, either plagiarise it note for note, or make it your own
4) Must be a cover of a released track. You can't cover stuff from a band yoiu've played in (no CoF covers from me then..., you can all breathe a sigh of relief)
5) Entries composed on a tascam or without drums, whatever, also welcome, this is about covering a song, not dressing it up in lipstick and a short skirt
6) If you don't submit, you're don't score points.
7) Remember that quality outstrips quantity, don't just post up tons of rubbish to try and win, we're doing this to get recording covers, someone winning the coveted season 3 crown is a bonus(*)
8) Mixtests don't count, there's another forum for that (ss.org)
9) Submissions to be posted as soundcloud links, or as a youtube video if you want to show off your 1337 video skillzzzz
10) No limits on recording a song you already know, as if pressed for time, this might be easier
11) Have fun, and learn some songs along the way

We will not:
1) Make people feel bad about mixing skills by turning this into a mixtest competition, it's about getting a load of us writing to a deadline, this is about recording covers, not about how awesome your headless kiesel sounds through an axe fx with superior drummer
2) Make people feel bad about how well it's recorded
3) Spam thread with songs we've had lying around for ages or anything non relevant to this competition and it's rules
4) Discourage anyone from participating
5) Tell anyone they suck, everyone has different levels of ability, this isn't a pissing competition

I never managed to do the originals song a week but I might be able to bash out a cover a week (famous last words), I've got a couple of ideas and I've been looking for an excuse to record some clean vocals as I've never done that before.

I like this idea. I've been working on a remix since I can't sing.

I mean, if collabs count, lemme know what you're thinking?

I'd be down to do a cover the way I remix. Song stays the same as far as lyrics, arrangement, chord progression, tempo, and meter signature go. Just different instrumentation.

Completely against the rules, recorded for a previously released album, but here it is anyway.

Here's mine!

So this is basically like a Chibanez-AIC, i.e. trying to make a copy but not quite getting there.

I wasn't a 100 % sure on the vocal harmonies in the verses, and somehow it also doesn't sound quite right when you're singing harmonies with yourself even if the notes were right.

That was awesome, I want to do some stuff with vocal harmonies once I get a bit more confident doing clean vocals. :metal:

Going to remind everyone, if you want to post anything done outside the spirit of this, then start another thread, no matter how badass or good it is. At best it's a bit of light cheating, at worst it is detracting from actual entries participants are working on and posting up.

Penalty points will be applied for present and future infractions.

Thanks guys!

Do it. When singing harmonies at first I often turn off the melody track entirely and just focus on the harmony in isolation - then when you know it well it's easier to sing without getting distracted by the melody.

In most rock and metal it's pretty easy since it mostly harmonises in thirds. With AIC I've found it's sometimes a bit tricky because Layne's and Jerry's voices blend so well so it's hard to hear the harmonies in isolation, and they also use more unique harmonies (fourths is basically their signature sound, but they also mix it up with thirds and fifths and stuff).

I'd really like to learn how to arrange more interesting harmony lines, like for example "Sound of Silence" by Simon & Garfunkel (booo at disturbed for getting rid of the best part of the song in their cover - the harmonies) or basically any choir pieces. I've done a bit of singing in some amateur choirs, but don't really know the theory well enough to actually write for one.

Why did it think this would be a good idea?! Learned and recorded this week so be gentle especially with the solo, the sweep section has one pattern at the end that i found a complete bastard.

anyway heres mine - Heart Collector - Nevermore :facemelt:

as usual SC has absolutely crushed it

So I unfortunately didn't have time to do the song I wanted because of work, so I quickly threw together something without vocals, it's Hans Zimmer's 'Time' from Inception, but black metal (ish). This is the first 'proper' recoding I've done on my Boss Waza Tube Amp Expander as well, everything going through my sunn, an IR of my Orange 412 for guitar and some random SVT810 IR for bass. No mixing because I have no bloody time.

is there any resource out there where you can download drum midi tracks? I've got a cover i'd like to put up but having never edited drums before and little time this week i spend most of my week getting lost in superior drummer.

kind of like a gutar tab site, but for drum midi?

In my cover I got the drums from a Guitar Pro tab. It doesn't perhaps have all the fills etc, but the basic structure sounds right to me.

That's generally what I do, if it sounds too shonky I might throw it at my drummer to fix it, but generally grabbing them from guitar pro tabs works pretty well.
