So, here we are, week 6 of the mg.org something for everyone challenge. Born out of some people liking doing covers, whilst others like writing songs, with a combination of a few people just not having enough time to do full songs (hence the lead a week). Do one, 2 or all 3. Also, it means I only have to track one of these per week.

The point totals after week 5 are as follows:
Markus: 70
Rev Drucifer: 70
scole: 70
Connor: 60
Iron1: 50
Randy: 40
Budda: 30
Brian: 20
Bohmer: 20
Vince: 20
7DT: 20
T Gobbs: 10
Mattayus: 10
Mr S: 10
Nick: 9

Rules are simple, do 1-3 things every week, Post your creations in the weekly thread as soundcloud/youtube links. I'm aiming to get various contributions for backing tracks, each one will be credited to the author. As it's the first week I'm doing a dropbox download, but we should get some dedicated hosting or something like that courtesy of chris. If you gave me a backing track, then you get bonus 10 points too, I am instigating that, as work should be rewarded. And points mean prizes (whatever that means)

The deadline for this week is end of play, Sunday 19th April

Short rules:
- You have until sunday midnight/monday morning to post your submission
- Either do an original song, a cover/medley or a lead over the provided backing track per week.
- Submissions must be stuff you've done this week, no matter how awesome an old track/recording is
- 10 points for each submission, per category.
- submissions as souncloud or youtube links. Well, as long as it is playable from a post in the thread really.
- You can do multiple entries per category, but only the first one will score points.
- no eliminations, do your stuff as and when you can
- leads can be layer, melodies, you can chop and rearrange the track, whatever floats your boat really
- Don't be a dick to other people. You can go to ss.org for that.
- Don't steal other peoples songs
- Don't steal backing tracks or pass it off as your own, give credit where it's due if you want to share your awesome yngwie malmsteen unleash the fjokking fjury face melting solo.

LAW Track:

This weeks backing track is a mad scramble to find something, so since everyone liked scloes, here's another non trash one. 100bpm and no idea on key piece found on my hard drive and that i've had for a while:

LAW TRACKS (https://www.dropbox.com/sh/ytsnyn7x1pfvro8/AAB3dZvWl7oHq006aW811zpFa?dl=0)

I'm constantly looking for LAW backing tracks, so, if you have something 1-1m30 (or a bit longer if slow) that you wish to donate, PM me. You get 10 points for being charitable and offering up a piece of music!

Have fun peoples!

Bust out the HM-2 to finally participate in this. With my rough approximation of the BOLT THROWER "In Battle There Is No Law" style mix. Which is the greatest Death Metal mix ever.

First part is HM-2 used in a more traditional Death Metal Way, not the Sunlight Studios Sound. You can tell when it switches to the more popular "ALL KNOBS MAXED" thing that has been appropriated by hipsters. Neither is really tight. What they don't tell you about that pedal, for those of you who have never owned one, is that it makes a shit ton of techniques impossible because of the way it's always blowing out the midrange. Certain chord voicings are impossible, it's mostly based on more punk like strumming, and you can't 000-000-000. It makes your guitar handle like a blown out transistor radio.

Hope you like Grindcore, but really, isn't it all just THE BLUES?

https://soundcloud.com/garrett-bockman/easy-listening-for-hard-times

Seriously though, It seems short, but building shit vertically, harmony as opposed to melody, takes at least 3-4 times as long as a "riffs and drums and bass following riffs". The sections where it's like, B3, Mellotron, Choirs, orchestral drums in addition to regular style rock kit drums, and Theremin orbiting your head + the regular stuff take forever to do. Especially when I am choreographing the panning and micromanaging the rotor speeds on the B3. I can write a four minute thrash song in like, an hour and a half. Less if it's a "sick ass mix test" where's there is some limp wristed "bassline" that is just following the guitars. 10 seconds of everything going at once probably takes longer.

Oh, also HM-2 on the bass. But not as a distortion. Strictly as a clean boost. David Gilmour used them like that on guitars in the 80s. It makes bass insanely "sproingy".

Not totally happy with this, guitars are a bit bleh which is annoying as it's the first time I've recorded my sunn and Hiwatt together. Also, the vocals are sort of... roughly... where they need to be. Also the spoken bits are... :ugh:

Iím going to have to pull my submission for this week straight out of my ass because after sending last weekís submission up to my drummer buddy in Nashville to record real drums for, a few of us got excited about the prospect of playing together again. Back in the 90ís him, his current guitar player and myself all lived in Maine. I was actually living with the drummer for a while and we were in a regionally successful ska/rock band The Bottlerocket Kings. Once we realized how easily we can send stems back and forth via Dropbox, we all got giddy to start jamming together and have had a couple writing sessions via FaceTime this week. Thankfully, itís not the ska stuff we used to do back then, but a heavy blues thing.

Iíll essentially be doing double duty for a while, as we wonít be churning out songs as fast as this challenge runs, so Iíll be writing my own tunes for this on the side in spare time. Iím also upgrading my studio computer within the next week or so and hoping to not deal with a lot of downtime in the process.

Those Once Loyal is their best IMO, they went out on a high note.

IBTINL is the gnarliest grindiest one though. The atmospheric intro of the title track with the ridiculous voiceover "DEATH METAL NARRATION" is one of my favorite things ever.

The

"In the fight for existence and life there is no law
And in the presence of eternal death there is no law
And as the struggle for power and domination prevails in the rising slaughter
It shall be every man for himself
As in battle, there is no law"

Gets me psyched every time.

I was debating extending this one, but it's already saturday afternoon and my brain isn't in it.

Since I can't program proper metal drums and don't have good loops (yet), the super fast heavy riffage will have to wait.

Enjoy!

I've been a fan of Entombed and(later on) Entombed A.D. since a previous bandmate brought Left Hand Path to practice back in the early 90's. Wolverine Blues was the one that really connected for me, just fun, heavy music, Death-n-Roll:metal: So I did a quick vid of Out of Hand, a little sloppy in places, but damn I had fun with this, lol!

They are pretty weird but basically 'drunk black metal'

Empty space meditation is a beast, the ep/track 'die erste levitation' and 'Der freiwilligge bettler', also the middle 2 tracks off of apparitions

Thanks guys! It's definitely the "metal player trying to do jazz" thing, I don't know shit about actual jazz music. I'm kind of a one trick pony when comes to lead playing which is why these tracks are easier for me than the earlier thrashy stuff, I don't have an inner Kerry King, only an inner blues man
