View Full Version : MG.ORG song, cover and lead challenge season 1, week 7

7 Dying Trees
04-20-2020, 07:32 PM
So, here we are, week 7 of the mg.org something for everyone challenge. Born out of some people liking doing covers, whilst others like writing songs, with a combination of a few people just not having enough time to do full songs (hence the lead a week). Do one, 2 or all 3. Also, it means I only have to track one of these per week.

Getting a lot of new people posting, and joining in, which is awesome too!

The point totals after week 6 are as follows:
Markus: 80
Connor: 80
Rev Drucifer: 70
scole: 70
Iron1: 60
Budda: 50
Randy: 40
Bohmer: 30
7DT: 30
Mr S: 20
Brian: 20
Vince: 20
Greg McCoy: 10
sogma: 10
T Gobbs: 10
Mattayus: 10
Nick: 9

Rules are simple, do 1-3 things every week, Post your creations in the weekly thread as soundcloud/youtube links. I'm aiming to get various contributions for backing tracks, each one will be credited to the author. As it's the first week I'm doing a dropbox download, but we should get some dedicated hosting or something like that courtesy of chris. If you gave me a backing track, then you get bonus 10 points too, I am instigating that, as work should be rewarded. And points mean prizes (whatever that means)

The deadline for this week is end of play, Sunday 26th April

Short rules:
- You have until sunday midnight/monday morning to post your submission
- Either do an original song, a cover/medley or a lead over the provided backing track per week.
- Submissions must be stuff you've done this week, no matter how awesome an old track/recording is
- 10 points for each submission, per category.
- submissions as souncloud or youtube links. Well, as long as it is playable from a post in the thread really.
- You can do multiple entries per category, but only the first one will score points.
- no eliminations, do your stuff as and when you can
- leads can be layer, melodies, you can chop and rearrange the track, whatever floats your boat really
- Don't be a dick to other people. You can go to ss.org for that.
- Don't steal other peoples songs
- Don't steal backing tracks or pass it off as your own, give credit where it's due if you want to share your awesome yngwie malmsteen unleash the fjokking fjury face melting solo.

LAW Track:

This weeks backing track is courtesy of Budda, in fact, he provided 2, so you get a choice this week (only the first will count through to keep it fair):

LAW TRACKS (https://www.dropbox.com/sh/ytsnyn7x1pfvro8/AAB3dZvWl7oHq006aW811zpFa?dl=0)

I'm constantly looking for LAW backing tracks, so, if you have something 1-1m30 (or a bit longer if slow) that you wish to donate, PM me. You get 10 points for being charitable and offering up a piece of music!

Have fun peoples!

Decided to cover something outside of my comfort zone, this was certainly that... Clean guitar, having to try and reach the 22nd fret on a Les Paul, playing finger style bass.. :ugh: At least I didn't have to do vocals.

LAW 7. Couldn't get anything I liked to flow over the other backing track .

Recorded in standard, solo part on my C standard S2 :metal:. I may post up another take that's sloppier but has some tasty bits later.

That was cool - had a neat video game soundtrack vibe to it.

Good stuff. The timing seemed a little wonky in a spot or two, but the progressions were sweet.

This might be my favorite entry of yours so far. I could totally listen to an album's worth of this and not tire of it anytime soon. More please.

Thanks man. The LAW was a weaker entry, hopefully next week things are better . And to my own track, too...

The last 5 years of writing and touring has seen me get much better at writing soft spacey stuff, so expect a lot more of that .

Ha, I'm the last guy on here to be taking shots at anyone's ability to solo, so don't mind me. My one and only studio lead was recorded in about 20 random takes where I just Kerry King'ed the crap out of the fretboard and we went with the one that sounded the best. Then I tried to duplicate it on stage - once - and failed so epicly I never tried again.

And, yes please to the "a lot more of that". :yesway:

I decided to knock out a quick original for once. I did some vocals for it but they were terrible so I've got rid of those to spare you all, unfortunately the terrible solo I did is still in there (I am not a lead player).

Guitars are my LPC tuned to drop B, Hiwatt Left, Sunn Right. Precision 5 string through the Hiwatt for bass. :metal:

Man, that was awesome. I fucking loved it. Likewise, I could happily listen to an album of that!

That is doomy as fuck and the tone makes B sound so low

Since I wasted my entire Saturday playing video games (PlayStation Now is the devil) I got up yesterday morning and said “No video games until I spend some time in the studio”. I took a riff I’ve had kicking around for almost 20 years that I haven’t made work in anything yet....it’s been pinned to the wall of every band I’ve been in, numerous demos have been made and nothing came of it. I tried it in a different tuning and it all started pouring out pretty quickly. Alas, not quick enough to get it done before the night was over.

As I was realizing I wasn’t going to make the deadline, I decided to unburden myself with the idea of having to have it done before midnight. I LOVE this challenge and it definitely re-kindled my love for recording new stuff, but I’ve found my output to be way too formulaic when I’m working under a time restriction. I may not have much more output song-wise in here, but I’ll probably start jumping on the lead’s and covers for shits and giggles.

Gonna check out this week’s goodies when I get home tonight!
