Actually the Bears in 1934 and 1942 went undefeated in the regular season and lost the NFL title game to. :)

If you rest your starters and you win the Super Bowl it's all irrelevant.

Not in a 16 game season though. (Though that excludes Miami as well)

I disagree. This is football. Football is played in rain, snow, sleet, flaming bowling balls.. 16-0 is something special, especially for the fans. If you're 10-5, sure, rest the starters. But when you're two games from going undefeated you don't hang it up. Every other team in the league would kill to be in that position, and every fan in the league would love for their team to be as well.

No you play to win titles. Undefeated is nice but winning the Super Bowl is what every NFL team wants. Plus this conversation is irrelevant since the Chargers were probably going to beat them again anyway.

You are obviously not a die hard football fan.

38 years ago, Miami went undefeated and people are still talking about it. Who won the Super Bowl 37 years ago? How about 15 years ago? Can you name the team without Google? Of course you can't, and neither can most people.

38 years from now, will anyone talk about the 2009 Colts, other than to say they blew the opportunity to go down as one of the NFL's all time elite teams?

The Colts had two easy games, the Jets, who they were beating, and the Giants, who suck. Two games and a 'bowl to be talked about 38 years from now as the only team to go undefeated since the Dolphins, and the only team to do it in a 16 game season.

Football players don't go out there to be mediocre, they go out there to be the best they can be. 14-2 isn't legendary. 16-0 is. 19-0 is, and if the Colts win the Super Bowl, it will absolutely be overshadowed by the fact that they COULD have gone undefeated and been talked about two decades from now by football fans, but instead their owner and coaching decided that a game and a half rest versus two shitty teams was more important.

Fail.

where's the herm edwards clip? YOU PLAY TO WIN THE GAME. THEN YOU HAVE A RETARDED LOOK ON YOUR FACE AND YOU ARE FIRED B/C U SUX!!

 that's herm edwards in a nutshell.

winning everything then losing in the super bowl is pretty damn hard on the fans. Going 14-0 and laying down to rest your players for the playoffs is fine IMO. Winning championships > winning meaningless regular season games.

I could also argue the Dolphins team after they went unbeaten was more dominant in the playoffs and in the Super Bowl than the one who went undefeated. Yeah they dropped a couple games in the regular season but they steamrolled team in the playoffs.

Here's HUGE downside to trying to go undefeated, injuries. The Colts minus Peyton Manning are useless. If he gets hurt trying to go undefeated then it was a wasted effort and people will criticize them for trying to go unbeaten.

Peyton Manning is a football player, and they had 1.5 games left to do it. They already had the playoff locked, yet he played last week, and the week before.

Football is a sport for people with balls. They play in the rain, with broken joints, in the mud, the snow, hurt, with concussions. Brett Favre is 32874 years old and he plays. Junior Seau is 40 years old and he's playing. Believe me, Manning wanted to play in that game.

It's what's best for the fans, the people who bought tickets to that game, and everyone that watched it on TV. Without them, there's no reason for the team.

And yes, watch any sports show right now. Team morale on the Colts got shit all over by this game.

Pats. They looked unbeatable then they lose on to this guy:

:noplease:

The Colts should have gone for 16-0 though. Knowing Peyton Manning in the playoffs (7 wins/8 losses, 22 touchdowns/17 interceptions 84.6 average QB rating) they should have went for something of note seeing as they have good odds of losing.
