Why don't I have iostat and memstat? Why did I have to hunt down the "optional" sysstat RPM in order to get them? Every UNIX machine has these tools, what the fuck is your problem? You gonna take ifconfig and netstat next? :noway:

Before we get into the distro flame war, know that I'm forced to support RedHat Enterprise at work. :(

Nothing wrong with this red hat:

No, I can find no fault there.

The problem with redhat is that EL requires a subscription for updates, so if you run a server class platform, congrats, Linux is no longer free.

btw you might be able to get away with installing apt and installing your utils from there, if you can hook up to the right repository.

I have a subscription, since my company is paying for the licenses. They came with our servers. I also have contention with the fact that we're paying for something that should be free.

I was able to grab it with up2date, but my point is that I shouldn't have to. Every other distro I've used installs the sys stat tools by default. RedHat consistently shows itself to be one of the more inferior distros. :noway:

install debian :agreed:

I used Fedora in my 2 linux classes and it was alright, I don't like where it puts configuration utilities and configuration files but it was alright. I would never use it for my personal system though, yum is slow as balls.

I'm installing debian on the itanic as we speak :yesway:

Do you ever get the feeling that they charge for it just so that people in stupid suits will think it's better?

Yes. If it is free it can not be any good.

Balls to RedHat and it's fucking package manager, and it's apparent lack of basic GNU tools

I assume that's why you vote Republican?

Redhat is still leagues ahead of Windows, in any case.

What's with that, anyway? Why do I have to cherry pick so many packages, just to compile stuff? Why doesn't all the GNU shit come in the "development" install? :wallbash:

to be fair about red hat most mainstream distributions lack stuff most people would have called essential back in the day, stuff like a compiler, etc. you know the basics. they cram in all this extra shit like thunderbird or evolution, I never use that crap, I have opera do my email for me.

before I left charlotte I went into one of hte computer science labs and the linux machines they had used kernels compiled back in 2005...

RedHat's package manager is a fucking plague, how in the fuck have they not thought to add in dependancy checking and auto installing? :wallbash:

I haven't used RedHat in forever though, have they fixed this?

check out 'yum' it's a copy of apt-get/pacman. I don't like it because it's slow and it sucks but it's better than having to download RPMs yourself.
