In a bit I'm running into town to check out a used Mesa F-50 1x12 combo. It's going for about $650(going to offer less, of course :D). It's got the cover, footswitch, etc. I've been searching for something small and portable for recording and gigs. Since we always play where the sound is more than enough, I thought one of these might be kind of handy. Plus, I can use it at home and not blow the windows out.
Any thoughts on these? I've played an F-100 years ago... how do these compare? How do they compare to the F-30?

I really like the F-30, but then again, i have a tendency to like EL-84 power sections. If the F-50 is anything like the F-30, it's going to have awesome tone and will be capable of getting VERY loud.

To an F-100, they're very similar. To an F-30, the midrange character is significantly different, but that is the difference in the EL family verses the 6x6 family.

How so with the midrange? I'm the kind of guy that really likes mids.

And do the combos have an ext. speaker out? I'd like to eventually snag one of those Thiele 1x12 cabs.

The 6x6 family is a bit more scooped sounding, while the EL family has more of a pronounced upper-mid bite. So, ask yourself if you like EL-34 or 6L6 amps better, as that will give you a good idea.

My experience with EL84s is in that they're kind of between EL34s and 6x6s, but closer to the EL34s.

Graphically:

EL34<------>EL84<------------------>6x6

But, my amp experience is more limited than many here.

6L6's have more "oomph" right? If so, I'd probably sacrifice the extra mids for that.

DonBot

And if I remember correctly, these amps are pretty high gain, right?

02-20-2009, 07:08 PM
Yeah, 6L6's tend to have that tight bass response, that is more like a punch than the rumble of EL-34s.

They're Mesas: of course they make a bunch of gain. :D

Imo they're pretty much the nicest amps you can get at the pricetags they go for. I'm rather tempted to sell my other amps and just get one of these though I think I'll just wait it out and save for a Mark V.

Guess it depends if my band starts gigging more often again. If so probably just get an f-50. Of course there are a ton of great mesas that go for cheap. A nomad is another great amp that goes for next to nothing at times.

i sure hope not, i plan on selling my Nomad 45 (along with some other things) to fund a Mark V :D

They're one of the few amps I like straight forward with minimal pedals. :agreed:

Well, I played it and I loved it. Too bad it's still on hold because of their used gear policy. The GCs here hold new used stuff for 30 days to make sure it's not stolen blah blah blah. The douche said I could put money down on it to save it but too bad I need something like now.
I also got to play around on a used Mark IV combo and I gotta say I was a little bummed that I couldn't get a decent metal tone out of it without the help of an OD pedal infront of it.

Even with the graphic eq engaged? That is instant "...and Justice for All" right there.

Then again, I just don't play ANY amp without a pedal in front of it.

I know, but you can get that tone on a Mark IV.

Oh well, I ended up with a beefed up 5150 combo. So much for light weight and portable.

I'm biased, but having owned an F-50 and now the DC-5, I'd say find yourself a DC-5. It slays the F-50, and can be had for mint at that price or less.

This is a little high, but if it's mint, I wouldn't hesitate to buy it:

Dual Caliber DC-5 Mesa Engineering Black Shadow Amp - eBay (item 270347731846 end time Mar-02-09 15:35:33 PST) (http://cgi.ebay.com/Dual-Caliber-DC-5-Mesa-Engineering-Black-Shadow-Amp_W0QQitemZ270347731846QQcmdZViewItemQQptZLH_Def aultDomain_0?hash=item270347731846&_trksid=p3286.c0.m14&_trkparms=72%3A1205%7C66%3A2%7C65%3A12%7C39%3A1%7C 240%3A1318%7C301%3A1%7C293%3A1%7C294%3A50)

Here's a nice one but overpriced:

Mesa Boogie DC-5 1x12 Combo Amp - eBay (item 230327309104 end time Mar-04-09 14:44:29 PST) (http://cgi.ebay.com/Mesa-Boogie-DC-5-1x12-Combo-Amp_W0QQitemZ230327309104QQcmdZViewItemQQptZLH_Def aultDomain_0?hash=item230327309104&_trksid=p3286.c0.m14&_trkparms=72%3A1205%7C66%3A2%7C65%3A12%7C39%3A1%7C 240%3A1318%7C301%3A1%7C293%3A1%7C294%3A50)

It is "Or Best Offer" though. The description is funny:

I am selling because I just don't feel like carrying a bunch of heavy stuff anymore

It's like 50 pounds, ya pussy!!

EDIT

Went to look at what F Series are going for, and check out this crack addict:

I absolutely LOVE my F-50.

http://i119.photobucket.com/albums/o147/arnoroth661/HPIM1118.jpg

People are correct when they say this amp gets VERY loud VERY easily. With the band I practice with currently the master on the 2nd channel never goes above... 11am?

The "contour" channel on the F-50 is the proverbial "rectifier" channel of the amp; I never use the gain channel by itself (non-contoured) for riff work.

I'm fairly sure my F-50 needs a retube.. I mean, a year and a half of loud volumes has to do something to the tube performance, right?

I snagged mine for... $799usd off of ebay, i think. That's with the custom finish, slip cover, hard case that it's sitting on the picture, footswitch, and tubes that broke during shipping.

Nice amp and guitar! $799 is a pretty killer deal with the road case included.

Why thank you. It was a helluva deal, considering a local music shop had a gone-to-hell-and-back-again black F-50 for $1200.

Concerning the sound of an F-50, I just renovated my soundclick... I put up a couple recordings with different mics.

Thanks man. It's definitely a keeper... Possibly the only thing I'd let this amp go for is a Roadking. :metal: I guess that'd be the F-50 + cash for the roadking, though.

Not sure what you meant by the sarcasm, I'm just surprised at that shop's audacity to charge so much. It's a nice amp, just not worth more than the original selling price. They're too common to carry that much value, IMO.

Sorry I didn't come out very clearly, it happens a lot. I meant I've been telling people that my amp probably sold for 1200-1500 new. I guess I should actually research the price before I go around telling lies that could potentially slander Boogie's reputation.

But yea, the local store said they paid about a thousand for the F-50 they had; mind you, this is with a broken plug, much finish damage, and no slip cover. They were ROBBED.

oic. I was just saying that it's ridiculous to charge that much for a beat up specimen when they were like $1100-$1200 new; another case of a music store not knowing what the hell they have.

Yep. I think it could be one or more of these:

They paid too much for the amp ($800 or more) and are trying to let it go with as little profit loss as possible.
They didn't pay much for the amp ($800 or less), but seeing that it's a mesa, they want a large profit margin.
They saw the glint in my eye when I found the amp I want; however, they didn't see the disgust I showed at it's condition.

you know, for reference, let me dig around my photobucket...
