Too damned early, I haven't even seen the GoT premiere yet!

Trailer was... Interesting. I'll need to see more to have any clue what's happening, but it's cool looking? Looks like we may be doing a 180 on the "Rey isn't a Skywalker" thing,if the title is any indication.

STRONGLY disagree, lol. Episode VIII was some much needed fresh air after VII (which, to be fair, I still enjoyed) was basically a rehash of IV. Sounds like Abrams was a fan too, and he's had zero patience for the "TLJ was sold out for SJWs" arguments, so I wouldn't expect to see a 180 after TLJ.

The Last Jedi was great, although I actually preffered Solo by a narrow margin. Don't get me wrong, I was a big fan of The Last Jedi, but Solo was criminally underrated, that movie had a lot of heart, great pacing, great twists. Absolutely loved it. Loved last Jedi. Liked Rogue One quite a bit, although I'm a Star Wars mega fan, no one who grew up playing Dark Forces I and II and reading the supplemental EU materials was that into it, because it was just a retelling of stories that had been around for decades. It was also a shame to retcon the Dark Forces games. The first two in that series are landmark Star Wars EU materials as well as landmark computer games.

I liked the Force Awakens the least. Disjointed bunch of scenes mashed together. Pretty much a two hour trailer.

More excited about the upcoming game though. Fallen Jedi Order or whatever. Even if it is EA doing it.

New one looks good. Didn't watch TLJ or Solo but watched everything else several times. Not making any grand statement about the new movies, just that I thought the "First Order" thing as basically The Empire part 2 was kinda lazy.

The thing I liked the most about the prequels was how much it blurred some lines with you rooting for the Republic and young Anakin, even already knowing how things were going to turn out. Star Wars kinda parallels a universe like Warhammer 40k, where the premise frontloads the idea that it's a universe in perpetual war. The prequels were badly paced but in concept, they delivered the message that there's a lot of layers. I thought going back to "Dark side, bad, evil guys in black suits with masks and clean uniforms, bad!" was a little recycled.

FWIW, I was one of the only Star Wars fans I knew of personally that was psyched to see JJ Abrams come in because I wanted to see him start a whole new thing... new designs, new characters, new cinematic style, etc. There were bits and pieces of that, and I wasn't even opposed to the Skywalkers still playing a roll but I thought the whole thing took up too much from where they left off.

completely agreed

Rogue one was a fine movie but it was a bit shit compared to dark forces version of what happened (it probably would require rewriting to work better in a movie format though) but even with some of the bits that could have been without (like the forced romance) it was fine as far as movies go.

The other movies are alright, probably not as solid but I feel at least from my group of friends they just feel like a rehash of the original trilogy. Everyone was disappointed when Disney decided to get rid of the extended universe because the EU had a lot of interesting stories and characters (even though it did heavily rely on the skywalker clan which was just fanservice lol). But the end result is just a bit lame, we got rid of EU because "lol reasons, too much skywalker" and then got rehashed skywalker trilogy so it was just disappointing.

#28 ·
Which is totally true and dovetails with a point my buddy made today. When Disney took over the franchise, they made it known the EU was being officially rejected as canon because they were going to do their own thing, then they proceed to make a modified Dark Forces movie and three more Skywalker movies.

To be fair, there was no way they were going to be able to be "true to" all of the old EU/Legends material. They've brought back some of the good stuff (Thrawn, etc.) and hopefully they'll leave things like Waru and the Ssi-rruk (and Han using a mind control gun on Leia in "The Courtship of Princess Leia") alone.

Are the Thrawn books comparable to the X-Wings series? I burned through the first 2 of those no problem, and enjoyed them more than I expected, especially how much it grounded the idea of a space war with more of the dog-fighter nature of it vs. traditional Jedi/Sith, dark side/light side of the Force, etc...

I haven't read them recently, but Michael Stackpole (author of the Rogue Squadron and X-wing books) was always a very readable author, regardless of franchise (BattleTech, Star Wars, his Age of Discovery novels, etc.). The Thrawn books (by Zahn) were the series that really kicked off the EU and I remembered enjoying them quite a bit in middle/high school.

The EU books aren't like big brain fucking mindbendingly complex bullshit but most have writing that is like 25-30 times higher than harry potter though so take it as you will lol. I read a bunch of them back when I was like 8-14 or so and they were pretty enjoyable. The jedi academy ones were pretty interesting.

#45 ·
I just think they should have finished the series out with the OG Characters and then made a new Star Wars series. So far I don't like either new movie and I grew up on the Pre-Quels.

They are just not interesting. The graphics however are incredible.

Abstaining. One of those people that got burned out by the last few, which bums me out because I loved the SW movies. I'll probably check back in when they move on to what's after Skywalker Saga.

Reviews so far have been beyond brutal from what I've seen but it's still the end of 40+ years of cinema and I'm sure there's lots of cool space fighting, so I wouldn't want the naysaying to piss on anyone's parade.

Was chatting with Drew & Dave about this the other night. They overdid it, too many SW movies in too short a time period. It used to feel like something special when a new SW came out and I say that as a guy who really isn't all that super-nuts about the franchise to begin with. I was still stoked to see new ones.

Now it feels like the MCU, where there's a new SW every year and none of the plots matter anymore because they're just cashing in.

The prequels were great if you were young enough. I loved episode I as a kid even if I find it borderline unwatchable now. How Lucas made Natalie Portman seem like a poor actress is absolutely astounding. But ultimately pod racing, darth maul, the underwater travel scene, and Jar Jar mucking about in a planet saving war was mindblowing to me as an approximate 8 year old. I was a bit old to watch clone wars or revenge of the sith with the same enthusiasm, but also know how much my friend's little brothers loved that shit.

Ultimately the overall plot in the first 3 episodes is quite good. The special effects were amazing to the children who it was intended for, and the characters, vehicles, and weapons were every bit as memorable to that generation as the x wing and darth vader were memorable to the kids who grew up on the original trilogy. Simply the acting, dialog, and a few questionable short cut choices in key scenes makes it a disappointment to adults.

The disney franchise has sucked. For the total opposite reasons the prequel sucked. In terms of production and acting the movies are really fantastic and can appeal to anyone, but the plots suck (other than Rogue One) and I really can't think of a single thing I would've wanted to buy a toy version of If I were 8. Lucas was a creative genius but can't direct for shit, the disney movies are very well made but are about as interesting or creative as Transformers 6.

I read the plot synopsis first, which I always do with big films I see in theaters, because if you don't watching the actual film gets overshadowed by "LIVE AUDIENCE COMMENTARY AND GASPS AND CHEERS AND OTHER STUPID SHIT". "Spoiler" culture is bullshit, especially for movies, yeah, don't spoil it for me so I can sit in a crowded room with a bunch of douchebags and miss what's happening while they re-act in real time to it.

If Wikipedia's plot synopsis is true, it fucking sucks. Like, really bad. I have tickets for Saturday, so final judgement reserved til then, but usually you can count on a Wikipedia plot synopsis to be accurate.

It undoes everything that made The Last Jedi compelling. The Last Jedi was a cool movie, the first one was an extended commercial to build hype. The second one was compelling and headed in a new direction. The new one just retcons all that. So you have a net result of an extended hype building commercial, and two movies that cancelled each other out. Giving this new trilogy no net reason to exist.

Contrary to what everyone says, Solo fucking ruled, and was the best Disney era Star Wars.

Nonetheless, it's fucking Star Wars, I've been a fan for a long time now, the people who are like, "THIS WAS A SHITTY ENDING TO A FORTY YEAR TRILOGY OF TRILOGIES" or "THIS WAS A GREAT ENDING TO A FORTY YEAR TRILOGY OF TRILOGIES" are over reacting drama queens.

Star Wars is a media juggernaut who hasn't been shy with retconning or outright replacing shit they didn't like narratively. Even before the Disney buyout. The mythos is in a constant state of being revised. The people who are like, "THIS ONE SUCKED, AND IT WAS THE FINAL WORD, SO I AM HEARTBROKEN" are fucking idiots. Like, how long have you been a Star Wars fan for, 3 hours? This is Star Wars, it's never the final word.

I learned that skill when I was like, 7, it's a necessary skill to have as a Star Wars fan. There is so much stuff going on that anything that sucks you just have to write off and move on.

I'm not particularly shocked at having to write off a whole trilogy.

The people who are like, "THIS IS SERIOUS BUSINESS, THIS IS THE FINAL TRILOGY IN A TRILOGY OF TRILOGIES AND THUS SUPER IMPORTANT" are idiots. "A trilogy of trilogies" was never the plan, they will keep extending things as long as they make money.

The Warhammer 40k scene has a lot of its own problems, but I will say that their, "There is no canon, if you don't like a story development, just ignore it" is the best approach to canon in any nerdy sci fi or fantasy scene.

This review basically nails it.

Warhammer 40k
That's the point. Warhammer 40k is about eternal war, nothing ever gets better and there are no good guys. The universe frontloads that.

Your rant about the Star Wars movies being entirely open ended is horse-shit. Comics and books were more fanfiction than canon. Most games and things took place at entirely different times or dipped into the original stories just enough to add a familiar character or another layers but they weren't there to reimagine the overall story.

Current trilogy is okay-ish on it's own, but as a conclusion of the other 3 or 6 movies, they're fucking trash.

I will also say, I haven't cared about the Star Wars fanbase for a long ass time, but I completely stopped caring after the reaction to The Last Jedi.

The fact that the re-action at Star Wars finally getting around to getting on the "Maybe you don't have to be BORN SPECIAL to be a hero" train in fucking 2017 was, "THIS IS OUTRAGEOUS AND FAR TOO PROGRESSIVE" was embarrassing.

It's fucking 2019 for fucks sake. The whole, "the entire fate of a fictional universe revolves around 3-4 extended families" shit is the tiredest cliche in all of fiction. That could disappear forever and no one would mourn it. It had a good millennia long run. It's not just Star Wars either, A Game of Thrones/ASOIAF, Harry Potter, etc. etc. etc.

The idea that a designated hero is only a hero because they are someone's kid is just fucking stupid.

Star Wars actually had a lot to do with entrenching that trope in popular culture, because post OT, they started thinking like, "If we introduce a new character, how will we get the audience to care about them..............I KNOW, IF WE GIVE THEM THE SAME LAST NAME AS A CHARACTER THEY ALREADY LIKE." Which unfortunately, is the worst part of Star Wars, and has diluted a bunch of stuff that originally made it great. Even the good entries into the universe are guilty. KOTOR and shit. "Oh shit, this guy is important because he's the great-great-grandfather of a character I already know".

Baby Yoda and Werner Herzog > *

You can't beat that combo.

If you had told anyone four years ago, "There is going to be a new Star WArs series with Werner Herzog in which he interacts with Baby Yoda, and talks about how great Baby Yoda is behind the scenes" you would have been institutionalized.

It's a fucking tragedy Klaus Kinski died before he could work on Star Wars with WH.

Going to see it this weekend. The new Mandalorian show is very good, the Fallen Order video game is KOTOR-level excellent. It's sad what I've heard about the new film, but I'll check it out later this weekend and make my own opinion. I actually dug Last Jedi all except for that pointless half hour on the casino planet, and as bad as Attack of the Clones was, I still watch it a couple times a year with my kids. Even bad Star Wars is still Star Wars, but I'm more looking forward to what John Favreau does with the series now that Disney has given him a much larger role in future films.
