I've been watching this with my girlfriend. Bulletpoint review:
1) It's entertaining - I can nitpick things here and there but it's been a lot of fun.
2) I have no clue what or if there's going to be an overarching story, or if it's going to be a Lone Ranger style "The Incredible Adventures of the Mandalorian and his Sidekick, Baby Yoda."
3) Baby Yoda steals pretty much every scene he's in. My girlfriend just coos and squeals uncontrollably whenever he comes on screen. We got caught up on episode 6 last night, and she had to go back afterwards and rewatch a few scenes because she didn't think Baby Yoda had a big enough role in this episode. I don't disagree.
Disney+ was finally launched here in the Nordic countries today also, which is nice. The problem is that only the first two episodes of Mando are available with the rest being released weekly I think. Apparently Disney didn't get the memo that most Star Wars fans here have already used pathways to watch the Mandalorian that many consider to be unnatural.
So, Chapter 13. I don't think I've ever been this excited for an episode of a show, and it did not disappoint. HOLY SHIT.
The rumours of Rosario Dawson playing Ahsoka were true, which wasn't really a surprise, but it was all awesome nonetheless. The Baby Yoda name reveal was cool, and so was Michael Biehn, although I only recognised him halfway through the episode.
I'm still kinda burned out on SW after that last trilogy, so I haven't been watching but following along since my favorite part of the universe are the bounty hunters and I'm a fan of Favreau and Filoni. That's said...
I'm not a fan of the costumes and how heavy they got into the Clone Wars and Rebels worship. The most recent character in particular I thought looked like bad cosplay, and made the show look cheap. Did they blow this seasons budget on the Krayt dragon?
A buddy of mine who's 'in the know' says they're inches from a Boba Fett series supposedly. I won't get my hope up, I thought Mando kinda fulfilled that role and I'd be worried a Fett series is just Kathleen Kennedy jumping in on the success of their "fan service" series.
Agree with you on the bad cosplay thing, it stood out a bit much for me...
The Thrawn name drop was awesome, it totally caught me off guard. My wife, who only watches for Baby Yoda, totally didn't get my excitement  I remember reading the Thrawn books as a kid, loved those books, it'd be awesome if they had him in the Mandalorian. :agreed:
I loved Star Wars as an 80’s kid, but haven’t found myself going back to them the same way I do Back To The Future. My wife wanted to check this show out so this past Saturday we started watching. We’re all caught up now.
Loving this show! Very few gripes and I dig the sense of humor displayed in it. Can’t wait for tomorrow night!
While the Ahsoka episode was awesome, seeing Boba Fett kick ass in live action for the first time was something else.
Quite the cliffhanger, but I seriously doubt Disney will let something bad happen to their cutest character since Thumper, so I'm not too worried. I do wonder if Boba's days are numbered, but I won't mind much if he gets to go out in a blaze of glory.
Like I said, they're going super heavy on the fan service with this series and wow, they're gonna run out of things on the fan wish list before too long  Filoni a total mensch
Unmentioned so far but since we're all SW geeks in here, besides Wow seeing Boba Fett in combat and played by Temura Morrison, there's the reference to "like my father before me" which was both a Luke Skywalker reference and also a reference to Jango Fett as a true Mandalorian, which is a retcon since Lucas said Jango Fett was just a headhunter that found Mando armor. A lot of SW folks that grew up during the prequels probably super satisfied with that.
One speculative point that came up is that Mace Windu may still be alive and that could be some part of the lead up right now, relevant since Windu is the one that decapitated Jango. Dunno if Disney will greenlight going that deep into movie canon but it's possible.
One stubborn item for me, a lot of people picking on Morrison's dad bod for Boba, which I think is a valid criticism. If you follow the timeline as it's laid out, Boba is supposed to only be about 38 y/o and Morrison is closer to 60. That doesn't bother so much, actually growing up I was a Dengar fan because I never thought bounty hunters were apex physical specimens, I thought what made them effective hunters were the fact they had no moral compass besides getting their target however necessary, and using their cunning and technology to get the job done. In that sense, if we get a Boba Fett spinoff, I wouldn't mind it being an older Fett using his knowledge and his tools to get the job done as opposed to somersaulting around every episode. Still, the portrayal of Fett deviates from where they chose to put this in the timeline.
I've seen a lot of criticism towards Katee Sackhoff being too young to play Bo-Katan, but weirdly not of TM being too old to play Boba; mind you I have also thought about that, but I guess you can just put it down to him being a clone and that he's aging faster than normal, yet not as fast as the "regular" clones. Can't imagine being eaten by a sarlacc and then wandering the deserts of Tatooine for five years doing wonders for your skin either.
I'm guessing the ending of the season finale will be seeing who it was Grogu was ForceTiming with. Probably going to be a familiar face, and there aren't that many to choose from either. Will we be seeing Luke played by Sebastian Stan? A lot of people have been fan-casting him, and that's exactly how Rosario Dawson got the part as Ahsoka. I'd love to see the return of Mace Windu though, and I'm sure Sam Jackson would be delighted to return to the role.
To be fair pretty much everything in the Mandalorian is fan service, and it doesn't really feel ham fisted to me.
A criticism I do have of the latest episode, and a thing that I haven't seen mentioned here yet, is that Tython seemed a little underwhelming. Looks like they went on location for this one, and the backdrop was very recognisable from a shit-ton of Star Trek episodes.
There's also the goof when Fennec says something like the Empire shouldn't be in the Outer Rim or whatever when Tython is actually in the Deep Core.
It wasn't as wild as the previous two episodes, but still excellent.
Have to admit to being a bit sceptical to an episode that was so blatantly about just having Bill Burr back on the show again, but I was very positively surprised. Not sure how I feel about Boba Fett just delegated to being a sidekick, although to be fair he does do more in this episode than in the entire OT; his new paintjob was cool as well, guess he felt inferior to Din in his immaculate shiny armour.
This week's episode was a little bit overshadowed by all the announcements from the Disney investor meeting thing, Lucasfilm went full MCU; Ahsoka live action series, Rangers of the New Republic, Rogue Squadron movie, and much more. Looks like half the episodes from this season of the Mandalorian have been backdoor pilots.
Say what you will about last week's episode, my girlfriend was NOT ok with the total lack of Baby Yoda content. Also, that holographic message at the very end was pretty dumb. Way to show your hand buddy, and I'm pretty sure Moff Gideon actually DOES know a lot more about the Child than you do.
Holy shit indeed; pure awesomeness, although CGI Luke looked a little wonky. And the post credits scene! Was a little worried when no Boba Fett show was announced last week with the rest of the stuff, but in hindsight it's obvious that they wanted to save the reveal. However, the reveal can also be interpreted as if season 3 of Mando is going to be about Boba Fett; we'll just have to wait and see.
Some relevant sad news is that Jeremy Bulloch (OG Boba Fett) just died.
