Since Bethesda is pure fucking shit now I'm really excited to see what Obsidian can do with Avowed. They fired a shot across the bow of Bethesda with Outerworlds and now looks like they are going after Skyrim with Avowed.
Fallout New Vegas was pretty much my favorite Fallout game, which Obsidian made, I hope they crush Bethesda with Avowed.
Has potential but if they really want to make this work they need to put serious effort into making the swordplay fun and not ultra fucking shit like almost every fp slasher. Im playing through GoT at the moment and the swordplay is amazing fun, granted its 3rd person but fp melee really needs stepped up for games like this to stay relevant.
I love the Pillars of Eternity games so I'm cautiously pretty excited for this. I'm glad they're not letting the setting die even though Deadfire didn't sell that well (which is shame, it's a great game).
I couldn't get into the Pillars games somehow - I just found the world and writing really dull and grey somehow, although I have only played the first game. However, Obsidian have made some really great games as well, so I'm prepared to give this a chance.
I kind of felt the same about the early part of Pillars 1 at first, actually. I think the typical early-game RPG stuff like meeting your party members and getting sent on low-stakes quests kind of muddies up the game trying to give you the background on the world and explain stuff like animancy and the Hollowborn plague. Once it settles in and you start learning more about the gods it gets pretty interesting.
I did play it until I got to Twin Elms, but I didn't think it got that much more interesting. Something about the whole feeling of the game felt dull or weird to me. The writing felt like they were trying to do something totally unique without clichés, but comes of as somehow pretentious. Perhaps it's also too serious, I can't remember anything particularly funny from the game. On the other end of the scales is Divinity: Original Sin (the first one) which is not serious enough, then games like the Baldur's Gate games or Divinity: Original Sin 2 have a better mix of silly and serious.
Obsidian was founded by the company that made some of my favorite games: Planescape: Torment, Fallout, and Fallout II (the Baldur's Gate series bored me, though, and that made up the majority of their releases), but to be honest, they haven't developed that many great games in the past 17 years. The Outer Worlds and... Fallout: New Vegas (which is more "good" than "great"). And I'm not really interested in buying an Xbox Series X.
Kotor 2 was awesome (with the restored content mod), Vegas good, Tyranny was great (I liked the world much more than Pillars), and Pillars got great reviews (it just wasn't for me). So I'd definitely say they've been making some great games.
I really enjoyed The Outer Worlds, but I thought Fallout: New Vegas was seriously overrated (it wasn't a bad game. In fact, it's probably Obsidian's second best game they've worked on, but it was still a huge step down from Fallout 3). But even so, I doubt I'll be buying this if it stays on only Xbox Series X and Windows. Sure, I just bought a high-spec PC that shouldn't have any issues playing this, but since I work on that PC all day, I don't really feel like gaming on it, so I try to keep my gaming on my PS4 (and hopefully soon my PS5).
