This is probably the best $13 I've spent on gaming since I scored a used copy of ME1 for $13 a few years ago.
After Penny Arcade ran a few strips on it, I checked out some youtube vids, and decided I had to buy it.
Now I just need to be careful, because I spend like 5 hours hunting zombies, expanding my underground/aboveground housing/cave network, and exploring the gigantic world each time I play. Thus, I need to make sure I have all my homework done first
If anyone digs it (and knows more about this sort of thing than I do) we should totally set up an MG.org multiplayer server.
Works on PC, Mac, some Linux, and even runs in a browser window if you want!
Here's how to play:
More vids on his channel.
EDIT: Buzz has set up a server. Here's what he says:
Alright, I now have a server set up.
Some things to note before logging in:
1. In my local test, it took me a couple of tries to log-in. If it says it took too long to log in, try again. Let me know if you're having problems and I'll see if I can do anything to fix it.
2. You are unable to mine/place blocks immediately where you spawn. I assume this is a feature to protect people just popping into the game. Just walk a little bit in any direction and you should be able to place and destroy blocks.
3. Hit T to chat, if you haven't already discovered that bit
4. I didn't see any monsters in the brief time I tested it. I dunno if it was because I was close to the beginning area or if it was stuck in Peaceful mode. I'll have to look into that.
Anyways, the IP address for the server is:

Oh, and this should go without saying, nor do I expect any problems from you guys since you're all awesome, but don't be a dick.
I keep thinking I should buy this, but I find that 'big' games with no multiplayer component get old FAST for me. I don't think I've ever finished a PC standalone RPG, and I've only finished a few RTS and FPS games.
On the other hand, I have a few maxed WoW characters, and hundreds of hours on CS and TF2 - something about playing with other people makes games much more enjoyable to me.
God damn, this is addictive. And I haven't even bought the full version! Might not be a good idea to; I just built a giant pyramid... with a secret underground base made of glass, going all the way down to the magma, with a magma aquarium (magmariam?) lining the walls at the bottom.
Then I accidentally closed the window before I could take a picture of the humongous fucking pyramid on top. I wonder how long the alpha is going to be out. I have an audition in a month's time, so if I can hold out that long, I'll be able to forgive myself.
Ok, so I started a new level after work, and man, did I get the most ridiculous starting position. I could see both iron and coal ore visibly from the little pond where I started, which turns out to be only a couple rows from the ocean (when it's daylight again I'm going to cut a channel into the ocean and make it a kickass natural harbor). There was some pretty cool mountanous stuff with little alcoves immediately above me as werll, and where I started digging my first shelter turned out to be an inlet to a natural cave, a couple blocks in. I've hollowed out the first big chunk and have what's basically a natural fortress, with three doors so far, my main entrance, an entrance (still mostly unexplored) to one rock face, and a third entrance that opens onto a little pool of water in an alcove that, when you walk along the edge and cross a natural dam, greets you with this:
IT's tough to tell, but that's kind of a natural amphitheater surrounding the lake. It's literally such an absurdly nice starting point - hell, I'm like 3-4 days in and I already have 22 steel. I haven't even needed to do anything with it yet, because everything's been so accessible.
I just made a boat for the harbor, too, which should be fun. :yesway:
I had my old save game on a USB key I used to bring it to work, so I just loaded that up before I lost all my iron  I made myself some iron armor, so I should be ready to kick some ass now.

I'll log in tonight. How does multiplayer work? Are we supposed to fight each other? Work cooperatively? Whatever we want?
The thing I really like about this game is you pretty much CAN play it however you want to - you can mine, you can fight zombies, you can explore, you can build, whatever. :yesway:

I need to figure out how to change avatars, too. :yesway:
BTW, anyone else wish the game had some sort of RPG-like experience system? Where you got tougher and did more damage as you leveled up, while fighting, so that after a while the fights got easier? This is especially true since I guess dragons are in the works.
I just feel like if you stumble upon a couple skeletons, even with a good sword and fairly good armor, you're going to take a fair amount of damage before you finish them off especially if you don't have a bow and arrows, and it makes moving around after dark or exploring deep caves a royal PITA because you have to constantly be on guard because it's pretty easy to die if you get caught off guard. I think the fighting gameplay would be more fun if after you got X number of experience points, you leveled up and did marginally more damage and each hit would hurt you marginally less, et cetera until at level 20 or so if you happened on a whole horde of skeletons Diablo style you'd have at least a fighting chance of coming out in once piece.
Or even a Zelda-like system, where as the game went on you could get more, ahem, heart containers.
Also, I wish the night lighting was a LITTLE better.
