Honest question - how much does something like this pay his backing band? Like how the fuck did he find anyone to learn these songs, rehearse them enough to play them live, and then show up for this?

Gotta admire the dude's tenacity either way.

In all honesty the best part of this story is the fact that the amount of publicity it gets is just indicative of the fact that most metal fans have no clue how to recognize a PR stunt.

Everyone is like, patting themselves on the back for spotting this guy and then they are turning around and being like, "That time in Norwegian history where a bunch of dudes dressed like clowns burned down churches was legitimately dark and historically interesting and definitely not a PR stunt."

Metal (and the record industry in general) fucking runs on stupid "look at me" PR stunts.

The fact that this dude made a historical footnote as a notably stupid PR stunt of the sort of thing that apparently doesn't happen all the time in showbusiness just reflects the fact that a lot of metal fans need to be given the whole, "This kettle is black as fuck, but why don't we take a look at this pot?" talk. People are like, "This is one of the few notable times in music history when someone has done something incredibly stupid to get their name out there."

If anyone thinks this is one of the few times in metal history where something was "faked", I would love to hear their thoughts on pro wrestling.

I imagine he dupes them because they're not yet old & jaded/realistic & experienced. He won't be getting advances from the venues, but an overseas tour is always a huge carrot to dangle to get people to do stuff cheap/gratis.

I've also found the reverse, when I approach musician friends about pretty financially sound/established tour offers, surprisingly often a decent percentage will find a reason why 'it's just not possible, as much as they would dearly love to'.
