I always end up listening to this one it seems like after I hear the original. This is probably my favorite solo besides "More Than Meets the Eye."

What's your favorite Testament song or Solo?
I've listened to this about 20 times since you posted it

Ugh- not to me. The original is so much better than this. The drums here sound Toontrack sterile compared to Louie's playing on the original which has more snap. This version pushes the melody over the intro back in the mix which diminishes what's great about it. Certainly would go crazy to hear them play it live but I don't want to hear a re-recorded version of it.

I was a thrasher back in the day but was never that into Testament... so this is slightly OT but I only just discovered this in the last year or so. And it's freaking awesome. The entire solo section is killer.

    The recorded version is amazing.
I mainly love Alex's solo tone from a Les Paul and Chuck Billy's vocals on the live version.
But to your point, you are correct on those things you mentioned.

Wish he would have played more to the original but Skolnick on Savatage's "Handful of Rain" is amazing. He was sick in The Trans-Siberian Orchestra, he'd always be lighting people up with Jazz/Metal licks. I couldn't comprehend half the stuff he was playing when I started becoming a guitarist.

Like this little crazy lick he did Guitarworld years ago:
