Pretty much. Nothing against the guy, but his days of being at the top of the guitar world are long gone. Even if that's a nod to his past, it feels pretty dated, guitar-playing wise.

This guy needs to get himself into a solid band. I love him and what he does, but he's a melody guy, and I think he needs some more solid riffs/grooves underneath his lead wizardry.

For what it's worth, I'm keeping my expectations low like I did when he released Energy and A Door To Summer, since the albums they came from are both great. Hell, Thunder On High Mountain is one of the best songs he's written in years.

    EDIT: Seriously, that riff.

He did. And we got Chickenfoot from it.

This one doesn't really go anywhere. Nothing pops out at me.

Surfing With the Alien changed my life. Incredible compositions and not a single wasted note.

If there's at least one thing to look forward to is Satch's live shows. They're always great and it's always interesting seeing who is part of his backing band. This time he's go this guy on keyboard.

Really curious how he handles Satch's songs.

I respect Joe but starting 3 decades or so ago he started the "guitar soloing over bland backfround" thing I have never got into. Today its morphed into a million home made youtube shred guys playing major key shred over elevator music / bland mind knumbing backing tracks. What used to be practice is not a limp neo-artform..... but hey that just me.
